Our dog Gaby had her 3rd round of Carboplatin on Friday, Jan. 6. Very early on Friday morning (2 a.m.) Jan. 20th she became very restless and started panting. When we took her temp. it was 103. We took her into the vet first thing in the morning. They ran a CBC and her white blood count was low so they prescribed ciprofloxacin to her to help fight off any infection she may have. Well they same thing happened again on Monday night and went on the entire night (no sleep that night). She was constantly moving around every 3 minutes and panting. Into the vet again first thing Tuesday morning for another CBC. Well, her neutrophil count dropped again even being on the antibiotic and she dropped 2 pounds since Friday. The oncologist has told us that on day 14 on carbo, things like this can happen. The other two treatments weren't this bad. She has told us that her bone marrow is not recovering which is causing these symptoms.
Onto tonight...she started moving around again and we just checked her temp. and it's 103 again. Right now we are trying to cool her off with ice and trying to make sure she is hydrated.
Has anyone else experienced this with Carbo? Any recommendations to help with the fever until we can get her in to the vet? Has anyone given their dog Rimadyl or Tramadol while on Cipro?
Thanks,
Joanie, Doug, and Gaby
OH NO! I'm so sorry!
I can't help with the chemo question. But yes, Comet was on Cipro, tramadol and Rimadyl all at one time. Comet was on Cipro for life because of possibly diskospondylitis (disc infection) and she took Rimadyl daily too. Tramadol was safe also.
I hope that helps!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
No direct experience here, but I believe Maggie's mom could provide some sage advice.

I don't know specifically about Carboplatin, but we had a couple of periods during our chemos that Rio's white counts dropped pretty low. She was on antibiotics for most of the time she was doing chemo because of it. The toxins from chemo are cumulative and it's not unusual for the side effects to get worse with each successive treatment. They may adjust Gaby's dosage or even have you skip a treatment if her CBC numbers don't bounce back.
Regarding the fever, it sounds like you're already doing a lot of the right things. Hope that it starts helping...

Hope everything is ok! We did 6 rounds of carbo with no problem, but I know there was a woman on the BoneCancerDogs listserv who had her dog experience serious temperature spikes. I don't remember what all they did to help, but that was the first time I'd heard of someone having that problem.
All the best - hope she's ok!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. No chemo experience here- just wishing Gaby the best. Its hard to see them uncomfortable
