We went for Gideon's 4th Carboplatin treatment yesterday. It was also met check day.

Everything has been going so well after the first month of recovery. Our boy was back! Running, playing, lively...our comical 'meatball' of a character.

We thought...'YES!! We've got this!!'

But, no...no we don't.....

The carboplatin is not working. Gideon now has 4-5 half pea sized nodules in his lungs. I'm so heartbroken....how can this be!?!?!

Gideon's oncologist switched his chemo to doxorubicin. He says he has seen this drug shrink, and at less slow down the progress. He mentioned something about maybe a year....I had stopped listening....I was in my own world, trying so hard to keep my composure.

Please. please....someone tell me he might not be right!

That others have lived past this 'mark of time' that they give you!! I feel so lost right now.....

I'm sorry to hear about Gideon. Sally's excellent response can be read by clicking on it so it expands. Hang in there Diana.

Sorry, Jim's working on this. It's intermittent. For now I recommend everyone copy (ctrl+c) their reply before hitting the "reply" button, just in case.

I'm so sorry, I know how that kind of news can knock the wind out of you. First things first: look at Gideon. Does he care? Does he know any different? Nope! He's  just getting on with his day, making the most of every second and showing you that Life is Good!

It's not easy to hear this kind of news, but it's not the end of the road either, there are other ways to tackle this disease. Your oncologist is awesome for trying another route, that's exactly what needs to happen. An oncologist once told me that treating cancer is like throwing spaghetti on the wall to test for doneness. You toss the treatments up there and you see what sticks. If something doesn't stick, you try something else. Cancer is a disease that can be managed once you find the right protocols which is exactly what your onco is doing. Good job!

As hard as it is, stay strong and know that Gideon isn't dwelling on this news, he just wants to know why you are so upset. The more you can be strong for him,  the happier he will be and the stronger his immune system will be, which is another key to fighting cancer. Happiness = the ultimate cancer fighter!

Thank you so much for your heartfelt encouraging replies.

I literally cried reading them. Can't tell you how much it means to know someone else understands and is there to lift you up when everything seems to be falling apart.

You all have been a lifeline for me. And I can't thank you enough.....

ok ... I tried to post yesterday and wasn't successful but I wanted to add that my shelby also developed mets after months of chemo and I was feeling the same as you. Frustrated, angry and couldn't understand why this wasn't working. We had a great onco (as it sounds like you do) who was calm and patient and we re-directed our course of action. The mets didn't shrink but they didn't grow (as much). Shelby ultimately lost her battle due to cancer in the brain (we had a different kind of cancer too). But I know how this can shake your very core.

But remember Gideon isn't aware of this change... he just wants love and to live and as hard as it is.... try and be present and in the moment. Oh how I wish I had done more of that! Hugs and love and I hope for the best!!!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Check this out.  If they can get a sample of the tumour, they may be able to manufacture a vaccine.  This vaccine has just been made available to vets in the past 30-45 days.
