Hello, My 7 yr old Vizsla has osteosarcoma. As soon as we found out we had his leg amputated back at the end of July 2014. We proceeded with 4 rounds of carboplatin and then metronomic therapy along with palladia for an amount of time. We recently took him off the metronomic therapy and palladia because it was too harsh on him- he had blood in his urine and they said that is a result of the chemo and can take some time to correct. Just recently they discovered a heart murmur (and rechecked it again today). I am wondering if anyone has had experience with this (the vet wont say if it was caused by the treatment alone but that is unfortunate. we need to do an EKG next month to see if medication can slow it). Can dogs live for a long time with a murmur?
We are also so excited to hear that the osteosarcoma vaccine can be here as early as the end of this year. We want this so badly for any chance he has to be here with us. Any help/info is greatly appreciated.
No personal experience, but hopefully others may chime in. Various members have posted about heart murmurs in the past though...

I do not have a ton of experience with a heart murmur in my pets, and I am still learning about them myself, but I can tell you that a heart murmur is usually found while they are very young. I have a cat that was born with a heart murmur, grade 1-2, and he has never had any problems and just turned 13 years old.....My newest furry family member, yellow Lab Zuzu was also born with a significant murmur/heart valve defect, grade 4; she is now 7 months old, doing well, and her prognosis is roughly 4-6 years. My angel Polly developed a slight murmur after a very stressful illness early in her life, but this murmur disappeared after about 3 months and was never detected again.
I am wondering if this could be a stress response like Polly's possibly was......but either way, I wouldn't think that a murmur that just showed up would be life-threatening, but it is a good idea to get it re-checked, and maybe get a second opinion. I know humans can develop heart defects/weakening from extensive and long term heavy doses of chemo, but do not know about pets having that happen.
Try not to worry too much, and as long as your pup is happy and living each day in the moment, just enjoy it with him.
Keep us updated on him......I am sure there are others here that know much more about this topic than I do, and I will be keeping you and your pup in my thoughts....

I may be going out on a limb on this but I have what they call an "innocent" heart murmur. Many doctors don't detect it and it seems to be more evident if I'm anemic. Not all heart murmurs are explained by heart disease. Perhaps its the same as for dogs. The EKG will tell you more.
Interesting about the osteosarcoma vaccine. I also hope it is the answer for all of those dogs suffering from this wicked cancer.

villaenr, I'm sorry I don't have any feedback either about a murmur but you may want to ask Dr. Shaw on Tripawd Talk Radio tomorrow.
As for the osa vaccine, here are some posts about it.
