Hello,
My 3 yr old Lab, Happy, is in surgery right now to remove his left front leg. He's a big, 75 lb happy, energetic love machine. He was abused before we rescued him, and his leg was broken and never healed correctly. We adopted him knowing that we'd have to remove his leg. But now the time is here and I'm feeling anxious waiting to hear how the surgery went, and hoping that he'll be ok in the days to come.
Glad this site is here.

Welcome Happy and Mom. Your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
You are wonderful for adopting Happy! Surgery day is soooo stressful, I hope you are keeping yourself busy.
I have to run, but I wanted to get your post approved so other members could chime in. I'll check back later for an update.

Debi and Happy! Welcome to the family! A d Happy, you are a very lucky pup to jave Debi as your forever human! Clearly you hit the Puppy Lottery when you picked her as your forever home!
Sorry Happy is hsving to have the amputation, but it clearly is the best option for a pain free life. We see this wuite often when a leg just doesn't heal properly from some sort of trauma.
There is a wealth of infor.atiin here on how to help your tripawd recover and how to help him live life to the fullest...safely!

Recovery is no picnic and you may doubt your decision at first. But when Happy's sparkle starts to come back...ohhhh myyyyy....you will be so thrilled that you gave him this gift!
Try and get some rest ronight. Happy will be zonked out on pain meds and seeing pink elephants! It takes a bit of tweaking to get the lain meds balanced and on a consistent basis sometimes. There may be a few restless nights and some discomfort. After all, it is major sjrgery. Rest, short potty beaks and more rest will be the norm for the first week or so. I jave a feeling though that Mr. Happy may feel a little perkier soo er than some dogs. Nice problem to jave!

My husband talked to the vet today. They said that he got up on his own today, wagged his tail, went potty and ate breakfast. So they said he's doing really well. They'd like to keep him until tomorrow, though. I haven't seen him yet. Not sure how I will respond when I finally see him. Sounds like he's doing ok, though.
I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions once he comes home!
Yay for successful surgery!
When you pick him up tomorrow focus on his happy face!
One thing that might help is looking at some post surgery pictures, that way you know what to expect. Go to the Gallery and scroll down to the Surgery and Treatment section.
Let us know when you get him home.
