Guinness is my 8 year old Rottie who had a right front amputation yesterday. I picked him up at noon today and he has been doing way better than I had expected. I thought I might need help getting him up the front steps, but he hopped up all 5 like a champ. He was even feeling enough like himself to take his new stuffy toy and the one he stole from his brother and set up camp under the table. My only concern is that I was told he drank lots of water before I picked him up and he has been in the yard twice and will not pee. We tried letting him go himself and trying to steady him with a sling. If he has not gone by the 8 hour mark I will call the vet. I feel so much more optimistic today, even though I know things could still get hard.
Hoooorrrraaaay Guinness!
If he doesn't pee by the 8 hours I would call, sometimes doggies just need a bit of help. Let your vet know but hopefully he'll do it by then.
Sounds like otherwise he's doing well!

Welcome home Guinness!
We must be getting close to 8 hours, I hope he has peed by now.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.

I called the vet last night regarding the no peeing and after two of them conferred, they decided he could wait until morning, but to bring him in then if he did not. We all got up at 6 and he did finally pee. I am so happy we have a low to the ground platform bed and he got himself up there without our help and slept through the night. He is also doing great getting down the steps of the deck(there are 5). but still floundering a bit on the way up. We are using a sling made out of a grocery bag for a sling and it is working well. I am very happy we chose the veterinary specialist since they did a great job and they have someone there 24 hours should we need them. I hope all the other Tripawds out there are doing as well.
YAAAAAAAAY. GUINESS!!!! We love to celebrate first pee aroundhere!!!!!!!!! GOOD JOB!!!
Now, do we have a FIRST POOP celebratuon coming up?
Guiness, I know you still have some hospital meds in you and may be feeling "good", but you be very, very careful on those steps big guy...no slipping or pulling out stitches, okay?
I know how wonderful it is to have your boy home and out of surgery! No he can just rest and lap up all that wonderful loving and spoiling that he so which really deserves! and you get some rest while you can too. The recovery for the next week or so can still be full of ups and downs.
so glad everything is going well exclamation point keep these good updates coming!
Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Sounds like Guinness is doing well with his first few days as a tripawd!
Tucker, my 10 year old Lab, also had his front right leg amputated - and we just celebrated our 10 month ampuversary.
Make sure Guinness takes it easy the first few weeks - our pups really want to do well but he is still recovering from major surgery
Looking forward to celebrating all of his "firsts" on three legs!
Hugs

Wheeeee! Yay for peeing! Glad things are going well. Stairs are challenging, he'll get there, just keep an eye on him when he does them.
As for your vet, feel free to put a shout out in our "Veterinary Specialist Referrals" discussion topic, it's so helpful to others when they're looking for someone good. Thanks!

Yay for healthy peeing!!! What an awesome dog, making it up stairs and even playing with a toy that soon! That is wonderful news, it sounds like he is doing pretty darn well already. ^_^ At first the no-peeing was a little scary, but good for you for noticing, and taking the proper action. He is in very good hands!! I hope that he just keeps getting better, and stealing toys! Keep it up Guinness!!!!
Hugs from Rox & Aimee
