My sweet 8 year old greyhound had a mass removed from her front leg and it came back cancerous (STS) While it’s not recommended right now, if it reoccurs we may eventually have to consider amputation. I wanted to see if anyone had experience with front limb amputations in greyhounds or similar breeds and how the dog adapted to the change. With her being such a front heavy breed I don’t want her quality of life to suffer
Following vet advice first and foremost (and going for an onco consult) but wanted to get first hand feedback on post amputation life in this type of breed
Welcome to you and your "Greyt" Greyhound.
Your post has been approved and you will get lots of great advice and tips here on how to navigate through recovery. My apologies for such a quick response as I have to head out. We can assure you that we have seen many Greyhounds, Great Danes, St Bernards Rotties's... all sorts of sizes and shapes of dogs who have done very well on three.
When I come back I'll direct you to some specific greyhounds who have had front leg amputations and have done very well on three.
Hugs
Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Hello and welcome to you and your Greyhound. I like that you are asking good questions in case it does come back!
So yes, as Sally mentioned, there are mannnnnnny Greys here who have gone through amputation surgery successfully and lived fantastic lives on three legs. Some lost a back, some lost a front. Here are some examples:

Generally most dogs will do very well and have a great shot at living out their natural lifespan, doing things they have always enjoyed. It's not a huge burden to care for a Tripawd. It's similar to caring for a senior dog, and it's a privilege and inspiration to watch their resilient nature shine.
Next week I'm going to post an interview with a Greyhound specialist so be sure to subscribe to Tripawds News and get an alert when it publishes.
Something else to consider is your home. Do you have stairs? Slippery floors? There are many ways to modify your home in the same way you would do for a senior dog. Not a huge ordeal, just taking precautions to ensure your dog is safe and happy.
I hope this helps! Holler with any questions.
