Hi!  I\'m temporarily fostering a 7 year old rescue who had a back leg amputation 6 days ago.  He is doing great in his recovery, walking, eating, energetic, incision is healing and pain has been under control (Gabapentin).  He is on his last dose of pain medicine and I\'m really worried for him that he will have pain tonight/tomorrow.  Is this typical to just have pain medicine like Gabapentin for a week post-op?  Thank you!

Hi and welcome! Thanks for doing this important work of fostering, so many dogs need fosters so we cannot thank you enough.

Regarding his pain management , some vets will prescribe a weeks worth of meds and then take a wait and see approach. Most dogs are on meds anywhere from 7-14 days depending on their age, health, mobility etc. Being that he's young I'm guessing the vet wants to see how he does once the meds are gone. When he finishes them, watch for pain signals and let them know immediately if he shows any.

You can help the pup adjust by doing your best to keep his activity level scaled way back. Focus on interactive brain games to wear him out, his body still needs time to heal but that doesn't necessarily mean he will be in pain while it does.

If he is available for adoption please put him in the Tripawds Rescue Forum and we can help get the word out!
