So just noticed that Duke has a pretty large amount of accumulated fluid under the incision. Guessing it's a seroma . It seems to be alittle uncomfortable for him to. Just wondering if anyone else had this? Also if so did they have to reopen the site to drain? Thanks

Gus had a little one, and that is what the vet said it was. The vet told me to try and keep him calm so as to avoid that happening or he would have to put a drain in it. I can't tell you if they would reopen it or they might try to use a syringe and draw it out, don't really know for sure. I'm just going to speculate that some of the uncomfortableness might be from the pressure of the fluid, of course there would still be bruising at the site. As long as it is clear fluid and not pussy, or if you are noticing a bad smell at the incision or a redness,I don't think you have to worry about infection, although the bruising might give it some red look also. Hope that helps somehow, Spirit Gus andDan
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
Holly didn't have that, but I know I've read lots about it on this site. Have you tried searching on seroma in the forums? That might help. Holly's vet had us ice her site about 3 times a day for 10 minutes, which she really seemed to like. We used a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a kitchen towel so it wouldn't be too frosty for her. I wonder if that could help his discomfort? I also remember lots of people used heat to help their dogs - I'm just not sure which would be more beneficial for fluid.
We'll keep fingers and paws crossed for your beautiful boy!

Cooper had this and then it progressed into the opened spot below the incision, seroma is not uncommon I dont think from what I have read. but as Dan says , please watch it carefully for redness and any bad smell. It always pays to really be vigilant until the healing is well established. We are all sending pawsitive thoughts your way!

the monkeydogs only THINK they have invaded the tripawd state
Sure sounds like a seroma to me. Mention it to your vet but chances are it will drain on its own. If not, a quick trip to the vet's will drain the fluid and make it all better. Keep us posted!

Thank ya'll so much. the vet opens back up tommorow i'll give him a call then. Suprisingly the site looks really good. No bruising, no redness just looks like a real long scar, as opposed to his last surgery which wasn't too pretty. So I'm not to worried about infection, just know that has to be uncomfortble, as others have said with all the pressure. But hopefully the body will do it's job and reabsorb the fluid. don't want my baby to have any more pain. Thanks

Hey Ashley we hope it's nothing too. Don't worry though, seromas aren't painful, just uncomfortable. The drain is no biggie. But let us know what happens.
