Yasmin had a reasonable night, cried a little but I think that was mostly because she wasn't allowed upstairs to bed. She seemed lonely, so I ended up on the dog bed with. Her. Cuddles work wonders, better than any medication sometimes. We took her down the vets this morning as her bandage had slipped - she now has a blue camo bandage! There is a slight swelling near the incision but the vet thinks it is not seroma and the wound looks ok. Vet was very impressed with her progress and mobility.

Had a couple of emotions I wasn't expecting. On the plus side immense joy and wonder - we can actually see Yasmin problem solving and working out which leg to move and when. On the negative side incredible anger - our garden runs adjacent to the main road out of Bristol... The number of people that have starred, appalled at Yasmin, didnt ask questions, just couldnt believe their eyes or hide the fact that she is obviously the weirdest thing they have ever seen and a bunch of kids that were hurling abuse at her this morning whilst she was minding her own business soaking up the sunshine.

I guess we will get used to this behaviour, but right now we could do without it.

Yasmin is doing an awful lot of sleeping (2 days post amp) which I guess is good and so far we have managed to keep her downstairs.

I'm so glad to hear she's doing well and she got a good report from the vet. The sleeping is normal and yes, very good for her indeed. Right now I would try to keep her relaxing in a small space to make sure she doesn't overdo things. Rest is really what she needs right now.

Well, as far as stupid comments by people....oh believe me, we get that. Most of us have been the subject of stares and comments by uneducated people, especially when they see a front-legged Tripawd (most people don't notice a leg missing on a rear legged amputee at first). I think perhaps Yasmin is drawing more attention than usual because of her bandage. That's not her fault of course. Once she is healed and her fur grows back you'll notice a decrease in the idiotic things people say and all they will see is how beautiful and strong she is.

In the meantime, remember, Jasmine doesn't care. Dogs are so incredibly resilient as it is, and when it comes to living with any kind of adversity, we humans can learn a LOT by observing them and following their lead. We call it 'Tripawd Power!"

And, don't forget you can have fun with stupid comments! Here's a great Forum discussion that you can certainly relate to and also find some great things to say to dumb people:

Got our first negative comment re: amputation

Hugs to you and Yasmin! I will be in the chat later today (around 3pm our time, which would be around 10 or 11 pm your time I think) but you can feel free to stop by anytime and see who's around.

That's great that she is doing so well! And boo on all the naysayers. We do get the occasional stare, but nothing other than a pretty benign "What happened to him?" Which, frankly, has surprised me--not b/c of the leg, but b/c Sam has an autoimmune disorder causing most of his hair to fall out. So what fur he has left (aside from his face and front leg) is patchy, ragged, thin, and moth eater.

Actually--when he was just bald, people asked and whispered a lot more. For some reason, now that he's a tripawd, I think they just assume the two are related and he survived something horribly traumatic and it;d be impolite to ask. :D

Were I you, I'd do my best to ignore the mean people--and honestly try and educate the people who are just ignorant or curious. As Jack Black says, "Screw you naysayers. Always f**ing naysaying." :p

You have got to click o to the links Jerry gave you! I've been here almost six months and just read these!! Even IF you dn't say them out loid to the garbage heads, you can think them to ourself!

Yasmin ks a strong, courageous hero! Something cowards could never understand so don't waste anymore energy on the "uninformed"

Yasmin is already enjoying soaking up the sun? That's wonderful!! Yeah, ost of us slept "downstairs" next to our pups for....well, for me, it was...gosh..I think well over five weeks.....she hasn't been able to climb stairs (mine are steep and narrow) vut she's now very settled having the "living room" lined up with three different beds for her sleeping enjoment as well as a sofa I've fixed so she can get up on that. I sure miss having that big chunk up in the bed with me though!

Yes, be glad Yasmin is resting....this is a huge surgeey.. She's still got a llot of hosp. drugs i her too.

Can't wait for more updates. There will be a lot more ups nd downs over the next two weeks.....but then it's all ups!!!

Good job! Stay stro g! Stay positive!

We're here for you!

YAAAAAAAAY Yasmin!

The slight swelling Yasmin had this morning has doubled in size. I have spoke with the vet this evening and gone to the chemist to get a cool pack. I actually feel like I am in control today. I have read so much my brain hurts, but I know what to expect and how to deal with it now... Hopefully winker

Yasmin has slept most of the day which is good for her healing.

k8 that sounds like a seroma ? If so, heat will actually bring out the fluid. What did your vet say?

Sorry I missed you in the chat, I had a crazy work day today but hope to be in there tomorrow afternoon. Hang in there! Give Yasmin a hug from us.

Hiya

Yasmin has had lots of cuddles, treats and a little time on the lead in the garden today. The swelling has not increased in size and we have been applying the cold pack. The vet wants to see her tomorrow to assess the swelling/seroma . He said they cannot drain it until day 4 but that it may not need draining and may go down after a week or so. There is no leakage or dripping, no smell or sign of infection. The dressing is completely dry around the staples and the swelling is further down, beyond the bandage.

Yasmin is getting back to her old self, even playing in the garden with her ball for 5 minutes this morning (on the lead). She is adapting well, but refusing to go back into the front room where she has been confined since her op. she sneaked past one of the kids earlier and got half way up our stairs, before I caught her! 90 percent of her time is spent sleeping or lying down.

I don't know about you but we have banned all visitors from our house since the op. Yasmin gets very excited when we have visitors, as of course they come round to fuss her.winker I have told family and friends that they can't come round for at least five weeks as I don't want her getting excited and jumping up.

Oh yeah, almost forgot to say Yasmin had her first home poop today. Right, now for the gross bit, ready? Her poop was normal brown, but with a very dark almost black outer layer. So kind of like a marzipan roll coated in dark chocolate! This was about the first six inches. As she continued to poop it then came out normal. I will mention it to the vet when I go down in the morning as I thought it was a bit weird. Black poop usually suggests blood, but just the outer coating? Have I gone mad, as I am analysing everything! Even the kids said I am taking things too far.

Thanks for all your comments and advice. Hope to be online to chat later.

Fear not, studying poop is probably everyone's pasttime here! We hold nothing back.

"Tarry" looking stools could indicate gastrointestinal upset, definitely mention it to your vet. It could also be just her system working the meds out.

When it comes to recovery, everyone is different 'cause every dog is different. What I say is, do what makes you and Yas happiest. My personal opinion is that restricted activity is a good thing and helps with healing. But like I said, everyone's got different needs.

I'm pretty late to the pawty, but welcome to Yasmin!!!

She sounds like she is doing great and it sounds like you have a great vet on your side also. Sorry about the stupid people and their comments. Makes me glad to live in a rural area as I would probably throw rocks at them!!!

Since everyone has already given you all the great advice I'll just say big hugs to both you and Yasmin. Take care and keep us updated!!!

Hi all

The vet is pleased with her progress but has taken her off of previcox just in case it was that causing the chocolate coating! Going back down the vets tomorrow for a dressing change. I think that maybe they should provide us with sleeping bags as we r spending so much time down there! The swelling is not getting any bigger and I think has actually gone down a bit. It isn't bothering her at all.

Oh by the way, we went shopping today and bought Yasmin a t-shirt. It fits really well and looks awesome. It's black, with security written on it. It covers the bandages and stops Yasmin ripping the filling out. Hopefully wont attract as much attention now from passers-by. Wow... She looks so good. I am a very proud pawrent!

Yasmin has not slept as much today and is moving around much easier in the house, wooden floors n all. We have been outside in the garden and Yasmin just wants to play. She pulled on the lead earlier and my husband remarked that she is still stronger than him! We're on day 4, no sign of depression or drugs upsetting her. It's like she wants to make up for lost time, but don't worry I am making her rest and restricting play time.

Yasmin has had several operations in the past couple of months, exploratory ops including a biopsy. She has been on tramadol and gabapentin for at least two months now. She never bounced back after any of the operations like this. She must have been in so much pain before and must feel so much better now.

We love Yasmin, she has a wonderful character, is defiant and naughty, just like our kids. She is spoiled with love by all of us.

What an uplifting post!  I'm so happy your baby girl is doing so well.  Our Libby pretty much sailed through her recovery and I hope everything continues to go well with Yasmin.  My hubby spent a few weeks on a blow up mattress with Libby, too.

Amy & Libby

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
