Abby had her first dose of Masitinib today. (Her onc prescribed her 300mg, in 2 150 mg pills). I gave it to her with her breakfast and a prilosec. Well, about 5 hours later, she had some pretty major diarrhea.
I talked to her doc about just going back to the Cytoxan routine if the Masitinib didn't agree with her, and he only gave me a week's worth to try, but I really didn't expect it to disagree with her so quickly!
Does anybody have any thoughts? is that it, are we done with trying this? Maybe I should have just given her one of the pils to ease her in? I plan to give her the day off all her pills tomorrow and call the onc on Monday, but just thought I'd see if anyone had any words of wisdom??
Thanks, (btw, it has not affected her energy, that's for sure! She is romping around the house terrorizing us, like usual. And this is after an hour at the beach this morning...)

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Sorry to hear that Abby's belly is not liking the masitinib. Rio had a little looser rear end a couple of days early on when she first started on it, but nothing that I would classify as diarrhea. She was on Pepcid, though, when we were taking the masitinib, and it's possible that helped a little with the tummy troubles.
I wouldn't give up on it right away -- when she prescribed it for Rio, my onco said it could take a little bit for her tummy to get used to the new meds. Your onco can always give you metronidazole or you could try Fortiflora (that's what we give Tosca when she gets the Texas Two-step). It's a powdered enzyme that repopulates the colon and helps with diarrhea.
Good luck!!!

Awwww sweet Abby! That had to be icky. Hey has your mom tried Green Silica Clay? We use it with Wyatt when he has runny poo and that, along with probiotics, stop the runs within a day or so. Run to Whole Paycheck fast and get some, you'll be impressed with it. Good luck!
P.S. I think your Mom should stick with the recommended dosage until you talk to the onco. glad to hear you're terrorizing everyone as usual!

Thanks. After posting I found a vet site that said it can take a little getting used to. We do have some flagyl left from when she was on the Palladia. (we haven't tried the clay thing. Will have to get some of that. Whole Paycheck... That's funny....)
Ok, we will just skip it tomorrow and call Dr. V on Monday.

Oh Abby! We can't have you sick little girl! Who is going to terrorize the monkeydogs?!
Please get better TWP!
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
What is Masitinib?
Levi was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-7-11
Ampuversary 10-14-11
Lung Mets Discovered 1-4-12. Chemo seemed to not be working so we switched to Artemisinin and other supplements. In May, Levi developed a sinus infection and started having seizures. The cancer had moved to his brain. We let him go 6-26-12.
Brand name is Kinavet. It's similar to Palladia, but newer and has slightly better results for certain types of cancer. It was approved in January of this year.

Masitinib and Palladia are both at-home low-dose chemo pills.
She seems absolutely fine today, but of course, we didn't give her her pills today. She was crazy as ever and no signs of continuing tummy trouble. (Didn't even give her anything for the diarrhea, other than some pumpkin in her meals, and she seems fine.)
We'll see what her onc. says tomorrow.
