My pup had his amputation about 2 months ago. The last couple days he has seemed much weaker then normal. He still gets excited and bouncy for food and car rides. The last day or two I noticed he is very warm and is lazier than normal. His 2nd round of chemo was 2 weeks ago. Could he just be sick or is this the deterioration I've read about?

Hi Seth. Sorry he's not feeling well. What kind of chemo did he have? With carboplatin, some dogs can see side effects 10 days out. It could also be that his white blood cell count is off. Don't panic, and don't think the worst. Let your vet know ASAP and have him checked out so he can start feeling good again. I'm going to bet it's a side effect of the chemo.

First, congrats on a TWO MONTH AMPUVERSARY!!

Gosh, a fever could be so many thi gs and could definitely make your pup feel tired and just blah.

Get him for a check up and the Vet can find the cause if it's an infection. It's two weeks out from his chemo so he needs his WBC checked anyway. It's possible that it could be related to the chemo.

When you say "weak",'do you mean "weak" as in when he walks, or gets up? Mjscle weak ess? Or more alo g the ki es of tired a d feels more like laying arou d?

Itsw good that his appetite is good!

Let us k ow what the Vet says and hiw he's doing.

Hugs!

If you are about 14 days post-chemo, please take him in and get his blood checked.  We were specifically told to watch for lethargy, fever, not feeling well, etc. in days 7 - 14 post chemo and to go in for blood work if we noticed anything.   It would surprise me if it is truly "deterioration" this soon - more likely the chemo and his WBC.  They might delay his next chemo or reduce the dosage.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Ditto on the 2 week post-chemo white blood cell count. Our vet told us to avoid the groomers and dog parks and pet stores and any place he could meet other dogs - and pick up germs - in that 2 weekish time frame because that's when head be most susceptible.

Good luck.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate the reply so. I'll haul him in tomorrow and see what the vet says. He wasn't as warm today so I'm thinking that's good.

As far as weakness goes I mean he will be up and moving around and it seems like his back leg gives out (rear right amputation) I know balance is part of it but I worry. His appetite is still good. Very good actually, he will pester me until I make him dinner and then he hovers until he gets his dessert. He still does his little front leg hop when I'm getting food to.

I'll let you know if I hear anything out of the ordinary. Thank you again.

Overall then, it sounds like he is feeling pretty darn good! Eating well, doing his little happy dance...all good news!

The leg weakness can be from over use aa d from not developing the extra strength needed at this point in recovery. It's about building core strength.

A Certified Rehabilitation Therapist could definitely help identify what type strength building exercise he needs. Do you have one in your area?'

The Tripawds Foundation will reimburse part of your initial visit.

Look forward to your update after the vet visit.

Sending good wishes...
