So Sadie's amputation this past Thursday, June 16th, went as well as could be expected. She was a little depressed, but after a few days was walking outside with one of the vet med students-we had the surgery done at a university vet med teaching hospital. She was eating and pooping normally up until yesterday. We were supposed to bring her home today, but she developed a fever of 104 yesterday morning. They removed the wrap around her chest where her right front leg was amputated, put a fan in her run, gave her extra water, and dimmed the lights for a bit. This dropped her temperature a little. The doctors took x-rays of her chest to rule out aspiration pneumonia. The incision site looks good, no seroma , and there is minimal drainage. She seems happy and responsive to people, but she can't kick this fever. And she also will not eat, not even rotisserie chicken! They put her on some antibiotics yesterday morning hoping that they would bring the fever down. It went down to 102.7 last night, then spiked back up to 103.8 this morning. They are keeping her tonight and, depending on whether or not the fever has dropped by this evening, they might admit her to the ICU for fluids and IV antibiotics. We are worried. Has anyone ever gone through this? We just want to be with our baby. Thanks for your help.

jen, we don't have any experience with this, but know we are sending our best thoughts and wishes to miss sadie - too scary when our sisters are not feeling well. hope the antibiotics help!!

Good thought from our house as well. Sadie is in a great place for being taken care of. Trust that she will be fine, and try not to worry too much. (hugs)

Holy cow, it's de-ja-vu. This happened to my tripawd, Maggie, 5 days after amputation. Low fever and off her food for 2 wks. Tried switching antibiotics. Didn't work. Made local vet give her IV fluids with Vit B in it...that helped some for a couple days. What helped most was the Belladonna remedy that "Admin" referred you to. My sister is a Vet Tech and works for a holistic vet. I also gave Maggie Standard Process Parotid supplement in which she readily ate right out of my hand to get rid of the chemicals in her body from anesthesia. Do you have access to a holistic vet by chance? If not, you can dose her with Belladonna yourself if you can find a natural store near you. I can't remember how we dosed Maggie but I can check my notes. But your pup hasn't left the hospital yet. My dog was home and had been home for 5 days...
The remedy can be given right along with any meds she's on.
Hope this helps.

This also happened to my dog Tazzie. She developed a fever and a Pseudomonas blood infection. She had a pre-existing liver condition and I think that the stress of surgery made it flare up. She had an IV antibiotic called cefazolin during surgery and post-op but still developed a fever and jaundice. I cultured her urine and started her on Baytril IV which broke the fever. She needed oral antibiotics for 6 weeks but she recovered well.
