Sending good thoughts and hugs for you and Emily. Hope the vet finds out that it's nothing serious... I totally understand your worries... Any weird thing I see with Jake... I just start assuming the worse. Please let us know what's going on with Emily as soon as you get a chance...

Hi Debra - we are just catching up on Em...I hope and pray that it's just a silly strain of a muscle. You are not alone in your worry...we all have been there or are there...it's completely normal and it's over EVERYTHING isn't it? Gosh, we worry about each sneeze or cough and the big things too...it just shows how much we love our fur kids and your Emily is soooooo lucky to have such a great and loving mommy like you.
I'm so glad that her doctor got her in...we are sending you lots of prayers and many hugs. We'll look for an update - hopefully a good one!
Much love

Thanks everyone. Here is the deal with Emily. Her remaining back hip has dysplasia and she has a couple areas with arthritis on two vertebrae towards the end of her spine. Not good news but not as bad as it could be. The vet has started Emily on prednisone and we need to watch her for about 72 hours to see if she improves. If she does not improve then it might be neurological but there was nothing to indicate that it is. Her x-rays ddid not indicate any additional cancer.
So it is good news in that it is most likely not life ending but Emily has a new battle ahead of her. After the prednisone we will start her on Glucosamine & Chrondroitin and also some Omega 3 fatty acid.
Thanks again. I will keep you updated on her (paws crossed) progress.

Debra & Emily, a five year old doberman mix, who was diagnosed with an osteosaecoma. She had a right rear leg amputation on May 19, 2009. On November 10, 2009 she earned her wings and regained her fourth leg.
Debra...YES THAT IS GREAT NEWS!!! Challenges? We are TRIPAWDS...we RULE!!! Emily will overcome this with you by her side.
Consider some physical therapy for her...when Zeus had a strained muscle in the summer it did WONDERS for him!!! It's amazing what they do with PT for doggies....my other fur kid has HORRIBLE hip dysplasia (not a tripawd guy) but the doctors are AMAZED that he does soooo well for how bad his hips are. I do PT once a month with Buddy and home PT too. It has really, really, really done wonders and it's gotten him off all his daily pain medicine except an occasionaly rymadel when we've pushed it too much on a hike/walk.
Can't wait for another update!!!

Oh geez, such big new challenges! My last dog had the neurological condition that I think you mentioned. I never knew what it was called. Yoda already has his back paws crossed for Emily, and I'll pray for her too, that at least it won't turn out to be neurological.
Way to stay pawsitive!! Hang in there!!!

OH, I am so glad the good news is no cancer!! That seems to always be the first thing that comes to all of our heads. Shilo and I will keep both of you in our prayers that she will overcome this hurdle too!! Our thought are with you. First thing I did when getting on her tonight was look to see how Em is doing. My daughter sits with me while I am on here. She is our animal lover too!! Just know there are many out there thinking of you an Em.... Hugs....
Shilo & Family
Shilo diagnosed with osteosarcoma 9/4/2009, amputation 9/9/2009. ShiloAnne lost her battle 11/23/2009 where she regained her fourth leg and is patiently waiting for her parents to join her. We will always love you baby girl.
YEA!!! Since it was not cancer but there is another battle for Emily to fight, we only used three exclamation points. Seriously, we are very happy regarding your checkup. We would never minimize the stress that we know you have been suffering prior to the visit. So we can all breath again but keep you in our prayers.

So glad to hear it is not cancer! Now you start a new plan of attack for the arthritis!!! Give that beautiful dog of yours an extra hug from me!!!

I'd definitely consider that good news indeed! Just an FYI, and I don't know how the prednisone affects this, but glucosamine/chondroitin can take a while (2 weeks-ish) to get to work. It's amazing when it does work, but it takes a while. My non-tripawd is on it and he does wonderfully and is super active! Before he'd limp and hobble after exercise but now I see no limping at all. Best of luck, keep us posted.
The prednisone is already starting to work! Emily still can not walk unsupported but she is trying. Her hind end is a little bit off the ground. That is a big improvement. She ate her dinner, even though it was dog food. Wow! This is all after only two doses. This is a challenge but the challenge doesn't start with a capital 'C'.

So glad Emily is already starting to feel better. I think with the combination of age and altered gate, it is hard for them to make it without having some effects from arthritis. It certainly will put a scare in us humans, though.
