Hello all...we brought Dutch home last evening and have started the recovery process. Man, it was hard seeing my handsome boy hop towards me. Vet said his surgery went well; we have a checkup tomorrow morning. He's on that Tramidol I have seen on the discussion boards here, and it seems to me he's not sleeping much. I spent the morning with him, then went to work (which for me involves trekking upstairs to my office, I'm a telecommuter). We set up the baby's video monitor ($99 at Target!) to point at the Pooch so I can see and hear him from my office upstairs. At any rate, he doesn't seem to sleep much. But he's drinking alot and eating, and this evening pooped! He even showed some interest in a couple of pooches out with their pawrents for an evening walk - I take that as a good sign.
Jim & I have been trying to research the whole diet issue and figure how to get Dutch eating healthy (boy, I wish I'd read those blogs BEFORE we found out he had cancer!). Does anyone have any experience with BirkDale Pet Mix, where you add the meat?
What a handsome face Dutch has! So glad to hear he made it through his surgery okay and is on a pretty uneventful and good road to recovery already! The erratic sleeping pattern is normal I think (from what Jake has experienced and from what I've read on this site). Tramadol made Jake rather restless a couple of hours after I gave him the pill and then he would sleep HARD for a couple of hours and then would become restless again.
I love the idea of having the camera on Dutch so that you can monitor him! I am rather jealous that you work upstairs and can be close to him during his recovery. I felt so guilty going to work a couple of days after having Jake home during his recovery but I thankfully live not too far from where I work so I checked on him at least once during the day.
As far as the diet... Jerry certainly has some awesome tips and you'll find soooo... many other helpful and great resources on this site as well. There are so many products out there to try but I don't think you can go wrong by doing your research and trusting your own instincts.
Keep on keepin' on Dutch you handsome fella!

Hi Dutch...we're so glad to hear that you're home and recovering...yeah, tremadol made me pant A LOT and I was restless too...It's one of those "what is the lesser of 2 evils" things...pain versus a little bit of side effects. It's normal. I felt like a million bucks after I stopped taking the medicine, got the bandage off and stitches out....it was like, YIPPIE!!!!
Keep us posted pal...we're thinking of ya!

Awesome news to hear that Dutch is home! What a lucky boy to have you home with him. My old house was the same way; Mom and Dad worked downstairs and lived upstairs. They only took me outside about 3x a day to potty for the first couple of weeks, till they figured out I could handle more trips.
Mom looked at the Birkdale mix. In her opinion, it sounds good for the person who is really busy and doesn't have time to ramp up and learn about switching to a home cooked or BARF diet for their dogs. It's quite expensive though, and it seems to Mom that you could get the same nutrients if you did a little research and prepped the food on your own. But otherwise it looks like good stuff. Just a thought.
How's Dutch today? Did he sleep better?

I still don't think he's sleeping all that well, but maybe he is when I'm not able to see. We had his follow up today to get the bandage off. It actually looks better than I expected, having prepared myself by checking out post-op pics from other Pooches. It's red, but not too swollen or bruised. He won't let us ice it. Vet said he was very encouraged, which I hope doesn't jinx us. He was pleased with Dutch's attitude and the way he seems to be moving around. We are trying to keep him quiet. They put an e-collar on him, which he hates. He just woke us all up yelping and I was frantic that he was in pain, but calmed right down when we got up to pet him. Jim thought maybe he scared himself with the e-collar? It is one of those flexible ones, which is good, except that it seems to fold over sometimes and you can tell he's not clear what to do with it.
At the vet's today we met a beautiful mastiff named Sydney; she was there to get her cast off from the biopsy. Her pawrent said that amputation wasn't an option for her, due to her weight and health of what would be the other weight-bearing legs. I referred her to this site and jumped up on my admittedly just-informed-enough-to-be-dangerous soapbox about commercial dogfood...maybe they can slow the cancer and give her some quality time by switching her diet.
So glad Dutch is home and recovering nicely!!!!
