Duke is in surgery today to amputate his back leg due to a broke bone and osteosarcoma. I also have a 9 month GS puppy who loves Duke and playing and getting into his personal space. Does anyone have any suggestions for recovering and other household pets? 100% separation? Rotating them in common area? Leash the puppy to ensure complete control? He does listen but not 100% of the time sometimes takes a few commands. Was thinking of getting a x pen for the house. To keep them together but separated. What has worked best?

thank you!

Annie thanks for starting a new topic. I hope that Duke's surgery went well! How did it go?

So about handling other pets in the house:

First, do you have someone who can help you with your puppy? Someone to walk him and keep him busy while Duke is in the earliest part of his recovery?

I really love the x-pen idea. That way the dogs can see each other but the visual barricade might prevent them from a wrestling match.

Most dogs instinctively know to give each other space when one is recovering, but a nine month old Shepherd may not be so astute. That's why if you have someone who can help manage his energy it would be ideal.

Duke did well. I’ve called to check on him twice. He’s staying over night at the vet for observation and higher pain medicine then I think they’ll give me to take home. But they said he’s already stood up turned around and is sleeping soundly.

I do have an amazing neighbor that helps me out a lot. But I do take Denver the puppy out for runs. But he still wants to play after. Maybe I’ll need to make them longer to tire him out. And just monitor them closely. I think Denver will be ok once duke is laying down. He doesn’t seem to bother him too much. Just kisses when he’s laying down. But I thought of putting a leash on him to better control him when he doesn’t listen. Maybe see how they do and then adjust what we need to do. Bad idea? Maybe keep them a little separate the first day home. Or keep one in the kitchen/dining room and the other in the living room. They could still see each other.

YAY DUKE!!! You've got this!

Oh thank dog for great neighbors. You know you could try interactive brain games with both dogs to tire their minds out.

I agree, play it by ear to see how they do in the same room. You know them better than anyone else. I would do the x-pen to minimize the whining and craziness when they want to play together but if you don't have time to get one, then your idea to keep one in the kitchen and the other in the living room could work.

The x pen is too big to fit in my living room. And that’s where Duke is the most   Comfortable. I bought a stand alone long gate and placed it between the 2 rooms. Denver has already flown over it. So I put a leash on him and let him lay down on the couch. But he wanted to be in Dukes face so he needed to go back in the other room to his dislike.
Denver will definitely need a lot of activity during the day. Luckily the pig unwillingly entertains him. Hoping after a few days they both will get used to the separation.

Oh that silly puppy! Too cute but sorry the gate didn't work. Can you raise it off the ground a bit so he can't jump it or crawl under? That is a good idea though to put him on the leash.

How did Duke respond to his affection?

Oh and wait, you have a pig too?!

Duke did not appreciate Denver’s kisses. He showed his teeth so I made Denver keep his distance. Duke usually tolerated Denver’s forced bathing but not recently.

yes I have a 8 yr old potbelly pig. They have their own unique personalities. In my case it’s attitude. She likes to bite the dogs when they’re in her space or she intrudes on theirs. She’s not fair lol

Duke is doing well though. He’s been out eats and going to the bathroom. Still barks at the neighbors dog. But he jumped on the couch when I brought Denver for a run /walk to the dog park. Hopefully he’ll stay there until I get back from the store. Guess I’ll have to barricade the couches when he gets off of it and I need to go somewhere.

Ruh roh. Yeah it makes sense Duke would be cranky, he's in a vulnerable place right now. It's good he's doing well and back to his body functions, all GREAT signs! And the barking is good too! Keep an eye on his activity so that he doesn't pull any stitches (he's wearing a cone, right?) and he will make it through recovery without any incidents.

That is way too cute about the pig! Oh how adorable your pack is! What is her name?

He does have a cone and we don’t like it. But it’s staying on until we go back to get the stamped removed bc I fear if I take it off I won’t be able to get I let back on.  Denver is being good about keeping his distance.

my pigs name is Rosalie. I would add a picture of her but when she jumped in my lap the other day I had my laptop there and her 130lb butt broke my screen. So I’ll have to wait to get that back to add more photos. My phone does t seem to want to.

they are all spoiled. Rosalie is a princess, Denver is a rambunctious child and duke is the old man that yells at them when Denver tries to play with an unwilling Rosalie.

hope everyone has a merry Christmas 🎁

Good job staying strong about the cone of shame ! It's an evil necessity, it works. And don't forget to reward Denver for being a good boy!

Rosalie and her big butt! That is too funny! I'm sorry she broke your screen and can't wait to see photos. On your phone, it's a little trickier to copy/paste photos here (after posting them on an image sharing site like imgur.com) but I believe if you just hover on the photo you'll get a "copy" drop down menu option. Then you just return here to paste.

I hope you and the critters are having a merry Christmas too!

Duke seems be to be doing well. It’ll be a week tomorrow since his surgery. Time is flying. He’s getting annoyed with the cone. Idk if he does it on purpose but he hits the back of my legs with it. Lol. He had an eventful day today. He spend the day at work with me. Where I thought he would lay down all day and sleep. I was very wrong. He wanted to keep going outside for walks. Or at least I think that’s what he wanted. He would whine and bark which is usually what he does when he really wants something or to go potty. So we went outside a bunch of times despite the cold and walked around inside the building a few times. Where he wanted sniff and say hi to everyone he saw. Needless to say he was snoring loudly on our way home. It’s 10 pm here and all the pups ate snoring near by. Duke doesn’t seem to leave me side. He had a comfy bed but insists on sleeping on the floor beside the couch I have started sleeping on bc he won’t let me go to my bed. And Rosalie is wrapped up in a blanket In her kennel. Pig in a blanket.
but anyway the more I see Duke wanting to go for walks, greet people look happy and still play. Makes me happy for him and my decision.
someone at work had a dog that is 11 and sounds like similar symptoms on home dukes story started with a limp and torn ACL. They said they would just put the dog to sleep instead. Makes me wonder if I’m being selfish or not. Either way I’m still grateful for Duke still being here. I wasn’t ready to let go. Probably never will. But I don’t think Duke is either   He still has too much life left in him.

Sounds like Duke loved being the center of attention in the office! I'll bet that tired him out, what a big day.

Ok I see that you posted about his nighttime anxiety. See my questions about that in your other post, it sounds like his anxiety isn't just a nighttime thing?

No, you are NOT being selfish for proceeding with amputation. Everyone's story is different, all dogs have different circumstances. It definitely sounds like Duke has a lot of miles left in him and remember you know him better than anyone else don't don't let the negative nellies get you down.

DITTO JERRY!!!  I'm really sorry that co worker wouldn't  give his dog a chance at ext quality  pain free time.  Duke is glad you are his hooman and not that person!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Thank you guys!! Duke did let me sleep last 2 nights. Even got to sleep in my bed for a few hrs until he realized where I was. He gets his staples and cone off next Wednesday. He’s destroyed that cone. May have to get another one. Has a piece chipped off then a large tear in the side. Probably from him forcing it to bend the way he wants. Especially when there’s a wall it’s getting caught on. Yesterday he had a lot of energy. Was playing with Denver. Trying to let him play and not hurt himself. Denver does very well with him though. Rosalie on the other hand just wants to bite so they remain separated. She’s a brat. Going to get more trazodone today to see if that helps with his anxiety. Hopefully.

Oh that's a relief to get some sleep. He and Denver are doing so well! That's really cool. Rosalie sounds like a handful but nothing you can't deal with.

Let us know how the anxiety issue goes. Paws crossed for some relief there!
