Great news everyone! Duchess is doing great!! She had her amputation on Wednesday, got her that evening. Those 12 hours were the worst!! She was in such a drugged/fog state. She would have moments of lucidness and try to get up and that was just plan awful. I slept with her on floor that first night. With the power of the drugs, she had dreams all evening/night. Whimpering, barking, etc in her sleep. Needless to say, I did not sleep much. But she did wake me up early that night to go out and pee!! We fell flat on our face, but she knew she had to go and I did the best I could to get her outside. Thursday she was like a different dog!! She lost the drug fog, was actually able to get up and walk a little. Most of the time she just wanted to stand. I supported her when she wanted to do that and talked nicely. Thursday night was good. She slept most of the time. Had to go out again in the middle of the night. Friday - walking beautifully!!! Up and down the outside stairs, eating pretty well, figured out the balancing and going potty without falling on our face. Took her to the vet to have her bandages changed/looked at - she did wonderful in the car! Hopped right in and stood for the whole car ride!! She did have some acid reflux due to the meds when she ate, so she is on antacids. also a stool softener as the meds make her constipated (all things you know). Friday night I was back in my bed (yay!). Again she did great! Woke me to go out again with a nice healthy bark, but otherwise she did fine!! All weekend was up and down, walked in the backyard for 20 minutes at a time, ate pretty well. It is truly amazing how fast she is recovering. Yesterday and today she is not eating much. I will be heading to Petsmart after work to get her different food - anything to get food into her. I did take her to work today with me and she has been napping most of the time, but everyone here is stating how much light has come back into her eyes.
I am very glad I made the decision to amputate. She is so much happier now, even with the struggles of learning to balance she is doing wonderful.
Awww. What a pawesome update and a great way to start the Thanksgiving week. Congrats on making such good progress, you're almost there to the "new normal."
As for food, even something as simple as a scrambled egg in her meal may get her to start eating. Don't worry though; it takes a lot of energy to go through this and many dogs just lose their appetite for a bit, especially because of the pain meds.

OH THIS IS A WONDERFUL UPDATE!! One of those...WOW...updates!
It IS amazng that she's doing this well soooooo early om!! In fact, it makes me want to caution about doing too much...but that's just me!
You might want to try the god 'ole boiled chicken stand by, especially since she's "off" just a touch when it comes to eating.
And that light you see in her eyes? It will even become more and more of a sparkle.....so bright you'll need sunglasses!
That's just her way of showing you how much better she feels now that the pain is gone!
So very, verynhapy to see this delightful update! Still take it slowly Miss Duchess for just a bit more!

Yes! She is on a chicken/rice diet. Helping her greatly. She went to work with me yesterday and slept all day. Came home and ate/potty, then slept rest of evening. I was doing my normal bedtime ritual and heard tons of commotion and ran out of the bathroom and she climbed up onto my bed!! Crazy girl! Anyway, she slept with me all night. When we woke, I found she had peed in the bed. As I got up and tried shuffling her out the door, she peed on the floor - too much meds! She only does that when she has too many pain meds/sedation in her. Well, with vet approval, she is down to 2 Gaga pills a day now! I left her home (fearing another accident) but stopped by at lunchtime. Absolutely no issues! Left the incision alone and no accidents!! I couldn't be happier with this experience. Now it is a waiting game and enjoy for as long as I have.
I am trying to upload a pick but don't see how. Help!
Hey it sounds like things are really going well! I'm glad you have experience with the accidental urination issue because it sure would have freaked us out. You're calm and strong, kudos to you!
As for adding images to your post, here's a forum post that explains how. If you still have challenges feel free to email some to us via the contact form and we'll gladly put them up for you later today.
