Hi all, Jellie's Mom here with a few questions to throw out. We were "listless after surgery" but she is doing great after amp surgery 2 -1/2 weeks ago and two chemo treatments. Wondering if anyone has had experience with a new chemo drug called Gemzar. Recommended by an oncologist. Jellie had it yesterday, so far OK but he indicated it can really affect their blood levels so I am really watching her for anything odd.
I also asked my regular vet who has been treating her ( and whom I like very much for his simple and honest approach, he treats my dog, not the cancer!) about diet and he seemed not to think too much of cancer diets. I read the book "Full Spectrum Cancer Care" recommended on this site and it's fabulous but the vet recommends so many supplements that it seems no dog would ever eat all those extras in their food. Plus he also suggest discussing this with your vet and since mine isn't receptive I am a bit overwhelmed with it all. And surely one could spend a small fortune on these items that might end up being rejected. I am sure that each person has their own regimen but how to clarify this

I think we all do come up with a supplement plan that works for us – fits what we believe our needs are. I believe glucosamine of some sort is paramount for a tripawd. They have a lot of extra stress on those remaining joints.
The rest is what you feel is necessary. Trouble was on fish oil and Missing Link. The fish oil to help boost the immune system and the Missing Link because I fed her a home cooked diet and I wanted to be sure all bases were covered.
Many use the K9 immunity, power mushrooms, etc, and I'm sure will jump in with additional information.

My supplement choices were based on three things…Maggie's homeopathic vet(Dr. Charles Loops), Dr. Dressler's book and what I felt would help her type of cancer(soft tissue sarcoma).
Maggie gets a mushroom supplement(Power Mushrooms or K9 Immunity), Transfer Factors, Maritime Pine Bark, Omega capsules, Dasuquin. And she gets daily rotating homeopathics from Dr. Loops.
Good luck in figuring out what is best for your pup. Most traditional vets, I find, aren't too much into diets or supplements. You have to seek out a holistic vet for that advice IMO.
