My 6 year old lab/shep was diagnosed a month ago with a torn ACL in her back left leg. Last wee she was diagnosed with cancer in her front right leg and the doctors have prescribed amputation. They are considering doing the repair for the torn ACL and the amputation at the same time. Has anyone ever run into this? She is is lots of pain and I want to get her fixed ASAP.
Oooh your poor pup, I'm so sorry! What a tough situation. Tell us more about her. What's her name? Is she in good health otherwise, especially as far as weight?
Two surgeries at the same time is unusual but not unheard of. I know there is a member here who had the same thing happen but I'm drawing a blank as to who it was. I hope someone can kick start my memory!
For now, though, based on what we've seen here, a good recovery like this takes a village. Some questions for you that can help us help you better:
- What kind of vet team does your dog have? Is the surgeon a board-certified orthpedic specialist?
- Is there a full rehab practice ready to help with recovery? This is crucial. See this blog post. It's about Tripawds who have surgery on a remaining rear leg but the same principles apply.
- Do you have help at home, to assist her with mobility for a while?
- What is your home like: are stairs and slippery floors an issue?

Her name is Lucy and she is in good health otherwise. Her weight is good an she gets Entyce to keep up her appetite. She has cancer in her front leg and they are doing an ultrasound on Friday to make sure they can safely give her anesthesia.
I do not know if the surgeon is board certified
I do not now if there is a rehab place near me
I will be at home for the first week after the surgery
No stairs but hardwood floors. They are old and not too slippery.

I’ll be back with more tomorrow but for now: get another opinion. I can help you find a surgeon if you’d like.
