Ugh. I just got a call from the vet saying she'd done his pre-op blood work and his blood sugar is high enough that they want to test his urine for sugar and see if he has diabetes...although she says they'll go ahead with the amputation anyway.
Does this sound right? She says he would need insuline shots daily if that's the case.......................I haven't noticed any other symptoms. I know it's a bit off topic, but since Im here I thought I'd ask if anyone has experience with diabetes in cats ? :/
It's not off topic at all promise. I know that dogs get diabetes so it's not surprising cats do too. Try not to panic, even if he does have it it's a very treatable condition. Remember, keep calm and take this whole process one step at a time to avoid getting overwhelmed. You can do it!

I don't have cats nor have I ever had a cat (allergic) but I do know that cats get diabetes and it can be treatable. So I'm not much help but hoping to give a little support where I can!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

I was just going to suggest it could be stress. Diabetes IS common enough with cats, but most of the time I know of it, there are other symptoms besides a random discovery of high blood sugar in a blood draw that wasn't LOOKING for confirmation of suspected diabetes. I had a cat who HATED vet appointments SO much. The last time she was in my vets office, they found her blood sugar was "off the charts" and found it hard to believe she could not be diabetic. Years later a home vet visit on unrelated issue had me collect urine on my own and with her blood draw confirmed she was not diabetic and never had been.

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly. His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.
Me too. Part of me feels like they're after extra money when surprise tests like that come up, but I think that's the part of me that's irrationally mad at them for finding cancer and cutting my cat's leg off.
I'm happy to hear that diabetes is not an issue for Harry.
The anger will fade. I found that I became very thankful that my vet found the cancer so quickly, that the cancer left with Mona's leg and that I could afford the cost of the amputation. I'm especially thankful that I continue to have my healthy, happy Mona still in my life. I have learned so much from her and her "I'll do it my way" attitude.

I am thankful. It was mostly stress derived, because I'm working hard to repair my credit and pay off student loans and had to borrow for the surgery and whenever I'm in the position of having to choose between money and my love's health (of course I choose his health and am glad I've been able to so far, but..) I feel resentful that that's how it is...even though I understand why it is that way.
