Hello. My wife and I are desperate for some help! Our 10 yo pitbull named Margo just had a front leg amputation for osteosarcoma on 2/21/23. She had a difficult post op course and would frequently wake up with night terrors. It was so bad that early on when it happened, I jumped out of bed and ran over to her to readjust her as we thought it was pain, she spun her head around and bit me on my face. She was completely dysphoric. We discontinued the fentanyl patch and things got better. The last few days she’s been whimpering more frequently and has had a few more instances where she wakes up from a nap crying. We can see that she is dreaming quite vividly. I think it’s the gabapentin. She’s now on 100-200 mg twice a day. Has anyone else experienced this?
Also, Margo is walking around much better now. She got her sutures out. But she’s really depressed. My wife and I are concerned and hate to see her this way.
Please give us some insight on these night terrors. She had one today and ran over to my wife whimpering and crying out of nowhere.
Hi and welcome. Your future posts won't need to be approved so post away.
I'm not a vet but based on what we see here, that is a pretty low dose of Gabapentin for her size. If anything she is giving pain signals that indicate she is not getting enough pain management . Depression signs are also an indicator.
It sounds like phantom pain which indicates she needs additional intervention so please talk to your vet asap. Many times increasing the Gaba dose and giving it 3x daily helps a lot but please talk to the vet before making any changes. Keep us posted!
