Hi all,
We are waking up to another beautiful, COLD morning here in MN. Gus' surgery went well, he stayed in the hospital for 2 days following surgery and when he came home we was already off the pain meds!!
We have noticed a change in his mobility from Monday to Tuesday, and I am sure that today will bring more changes too!
We had some neighbor dogs over yesterday afternoon to play with Guinness (our 6 month Great Dane puppy) and Gus immediately got up and went to the front door--he wanted to play! His tail was wagging so much I was afraid he was going to lose his balance!! Of course we kept him inside, but it was great to see him up and wanting to play!
Our kids have been just wonderful...reading stories to him when then get home from school and inviting their friends over to pet and see Gus.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the support here...sorry I haven't updated sooner, but have been busy!
The only thing I am worried about is that Gus' not each too much. He did get one serving down yesterday and we were thrilled...I guess we just keep trying and when he's hungry he'll eat?!?!? He is drinking lots which is great.
Thanks again for all the support!

wow, off of the pain meds already - that is so quick!!! hopefully, he's not having any pain and that's keeping him from eating. many times the drugs seem to affect our pups' appetites. have you tried any 'special' treats like chicken or a hamburger or such? the first two weeks can be tough, so a little 'baby-ing' isn't a bad thing...if it gets gus to eat!!

Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.
Love Never Ends
Great news! I am so happy Gus is doing well. Before you know it, he will be outside running with all his friends.
Fergus didn't have much of an appetite his first 2 weeks post amp. He would pick at "special" food like burger, chicken, Frosty Paws, canned dog food, etc. His appetite did eventually come back. I'm sure Gus' will too. Just be careful with his weight now he is a tripawd. You don't want to put too much weight on his remaining legs.
Give him a great big hug from us,
Tara, Spirit Fergus and Shamus
Hooray Gus. The tail speaks volumes! Sounds like he is a happy boy.
Abby also had little appetite for the first week. (Well, she always had little appetite, so she had almost no appetite for a few days...) We had to really spoil her to get her to eat - hamburger, salmon, cottage cheese.
Surprised he is off the pain meds already! Most dogs are on them at least a week. What a trooper. (Might want to have some handy - just in case?)
Hope he continues to do well!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. I can chime in a little bit Ryder too was in the hospital for two days before he came home and they sent him home with no pain meds as well. Since then though we are now on pain meds because he is having some tummy issues since being home. His appetite was good at first but since has decreased and I know when I called they said one of the signs that they may be having some pain is if they stop eating or drinking and also how is his breathing? Ryder was doing alot of panting like he was hot but never ran a fever or anything. Another thing my vet said is they would rather I call them 10 times a day and it be nothing then to not call and it be something so if you have any questions at all just give them a call. Hope he gets better I know how hard it is to sit and watch and wonder.

Welcome home Gus!
Is he still on antibiotics? Sometimes those can cause stomach issues as well. I am a fan of feeding rice and hamburger or rice an chicken when the pups are "off their feed".
