Everything is all crazy rigght now, but that won't last forever:-)
WE'RE HERE FOR YOU:-) Sally and Happy Hannah
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
Thinking of you Cora. You are such a fighter and you will get over this hurdle. you are so lucky to have your Mom who loves all the special things about you and cares so so much.
Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.
Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.
Hi All,
The first part of Cora's night was ruff (as Jerry would say) but really she's doing pretty well. She wanted me to be there touching her, so we slept on the floor together. This morning she was doing really well. She's a bit grumpy now. She's been moving around more so I'm thinking that's why. She's walking, eating, drinking and peeing!
She's walking very cautiously and uncertainly. She has not been circling at all. How am so curious to see how she does. How much the stump effected her walking.
We did decide to keep the scapula. My vet consulted with another surgeon to make sure that was the right choice. It was a lot less surgery for her and there's nothing for sticking out for her to fall on. It's very smooth and they took muscle and pulled it over the area so it's extra padded. (I may not have explained that well). I really don't see falling and injuring it as a risk. We also talked about the risk of pressure sores or whatever you call it, and the risk for Cora is low. She's get a pretty heavy coat and she's fairly light.
Here' a picture of her last night when she first got on her feet and then this morning.
i think I'm forgetting something but for now that's the update
PS- Oh yeah, sorry I kept disappearing from chat. Between cora, my computer and my tiredness chat was just not really happening

If that's the worst of the first night home immediately after surgery I'd say that's a pretty good night! I know it's easy for me to say, I'm not the one who's sleep deprived.
Cora looks GREAT. She really does look like she's more comfortable. Maybe it's the drugs but I'm really thinking that she is feeling good.
Don't apologize for skipping the chat, you have your hands full. Hang in there!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. "You aren't doing it TO her, you are doing it FOR her. Give her a chance at life."
Last night Cora pooped and I thought that was great. Then she let me sleep for almost 7 hours and woke me because she was hungry not in pain. I was thinking great. She acting like herself, but then as the morning progressed she just seemed to be having a miserable time.
She finally fell asleep and I didn't want to wake her up so I left her out of the kennel and took floyd for a walk. floyd found a doggy friend and so i stayed away longer than I planned wanted to and when i came home I discovered cora had been bleeding. sigh.
her sutures looked good so I was hopeful it wasn't anything to serious but it was a steady drip so I called the vet who said yes bring her in. She checked cora out an says it's a seroma again. blah. she said she thinks it was dripping so much because the blood/fluid had pooled and when cora stood up then it was all there to drain out.
I'm just...disheartened.

Hang in there...it WILL get better. From all the reading I've done around here, the seromas seem kind of common. You're hitting some bumps in the road but it will get better. Cora looks so dear lying there. She reminds me of my Libby when we brought her home. The incision looks almost identical. If you can, sleep when Cora sleeps. Oh...yay for the pooping!
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
I know it's scarey. If it's any reassurance....everyti g Cora is experiencing is "normal". In fact, maybe what really isn't the norm is how well she did the first night!!
My Happy Hannah had huge swelling and horrible coloring around the site for close to two weeks. She did not have the dripping but, again, of unexpected sometimes.
Also, on the third day after amputation, Happy Hannah finally started showing some sparkle----and then BOOM:-) That only lasted a day and she started going backwards! Well, after reading everyone's responses to my "meltdown" (one of many), I found out that was "normal" too!
Cora WILL get better and better---may move forward a step--may move back. Eventually all steps will be forward.
This is when my favorite life lesson for me comes to min "Give me patience--and hurry up, I need it now":-)
Stay connected to us.....we're here and have a lot of "been there, done that" experience:-)
You are soooooo strong! Sallh and Happy Hannah

Chris, this is so normal. Even I had to go back to get my seroma drained. I think things sound like things are going pretty good considering all that you have been through. I know it's so hard to see that right now but I promise that in a week you will wonder why you were so disheartened today.
Hang in there!

Hang in there. Everything sounds very normal. And, Cora looks so beautiful in that photo. She is looking amazing.
Karen and Spirit Magnum
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
Yesterday was smoother although there were a few ruff patches. Cora wants off the porch but I'm not letting her which ticks her off. Cora gets hyperactive before she poops and then she ends up falling down and getting upset. She also did that one other time and I don't know why. So there were a few points where she was agitated and making herself miserable and wouldn't let me help her, but mostly she was in her kennel keeping quiet.
This morning she is walking much more normally

So much of that could be meds related...and maybe even pain related. Many will also tell you that their dogs didn't like being helped either.
Even though she seems to be walking fairly well, she's still only four days out from a major surgery:-)
You and Ms. Cora are doing really well! She is soooo lucky to have you!
Keep the updates coming! Guess the bleed I g has stopped?
Take care of YOU while you take care of Cora:-) Sally and Happy Hannah

I'm glad to hear about the slow but steady progress. The confinement sure sounds like it's helping, as hard as it is to stick to it and put that tough love out there. I'm curious if during recovery you've tried any extra calming remedies like dap pheromones, rescue remedy, that kind of thing?
