Hi Guys, Our nine year old Rottweiler Cooper is heading into surgery tomorrow for amputation of his right front leg due to osteosarcoma. We are nervous and as I'm sitting her writing this I feel bad because he's snoring away blissfully unaware of what's happening in the morning!
We have had so much comfort reading these forums and loved seeing all of stories which has made us feel like that this is the best decision for him and we would love to be able to keep you updated so we can seek any advice from all of you that have been here before because I know the next wee while is going to be hard..... or maybe he will prove us wrong, who knows!
Here is cooper on our holiday at the weekend were we found his town and his last four legged walk before his surgery tomorrow [Image Can Not Be Found]

Hey Jess, glad you started a new topic here! Cooper's moving on and into the Tripawd life, and we are here to help.
My best recommendations are to keep a cool head, don't panic, and know that Cooper is going to impress you with his resilient nature. No, it won't be easy at first but it won't take long until you see his sparkle come back. If you ever feel doubtful, just come here and lean on us OK?
Check out Jerry's Required Reading List and the Tripawds What to Expect articles to get ready. Speaking of, how's your house? Is it slip-proof? Do you have staircases that need blocking? What about raised feeding stations? Those are really helpful, even if you just put his bowls up on a box.
We would love to see that photo!
This is how adding images to the Forums works.
- Upload pics to a photo sharing site like imgur.com or your own Tripawds blog (https://tripawd...../supporter). Pictures and video have to be hosted (live) somewhere other than in the forums.
- Once the photo is uploaded somewhere, right click and copy the Image URL or just copy the image if you’re on a phone
- Return to your Tripawds Forum post and paste the image URL (or the image itself) in your post. It should automatically appear.
If you’d like help figuring out the process let me know.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all of the resources and encouragement! We dropped Cooper of this morning, the vet is going to do a full check while he's under to see if there is anything else suspicious looking so we have our fingers crossed that they don't find anything.
Unfortunately not long before we found out that Cooper has osteosarcoma we moved city's from what would of been an ideal house for him to recover in and into a double story house that has stairs to get outside. The floor down stairs is slippery and the bedrooms are upstairs. Cooper is very much our shadow and he sleeps in the bedroom so while he gets used to things it looks like I might be on the couch! I have gone out this morning and bought a raised feeding bowl and some matts for the floor so hopefully we can mange ok.
We will keep you updated on how we are going
Oh I love him! What a funny and adorable photo, I'm so glad you were able to post it.
It figures about the house move, doesn't it? Sheesh! Well, you're already making adjustments for him so that's really good. How many stairs does he need to go outside? If it's only a few, say less than 5, he should be able to manage OK. And eventually he can do those stairs inside. If there are many of them, we recommend a harness like the Ruffwear Flagline or Webmaster to help you assist him.
But first things first, get through recovery and sounds like some nights on the couch. We are here to help so keep us posted!

Cooper is home from his amputation on Tuesday and doing well! The surgery went really well and the vet was very happy, the chest x-rays were also clear. Yay! I'm really proud of him, its amazing to think that 48 hours ago he was in surgery.
He wouldn't walk at all when we picked him up but the vet dobbed him in because apparently he had been up and hopping around when we weren't there! We think he's milking it a little with mum and dad and he is more capable than he lets on haha. Fair enough too, I would do the same! When I ask him to get up for food he tries and cant buuuut if I just turn around and go and get his food when I turn back he's up and standing ready and waiting haha. This morning he ate standing up on his own for the first time.
We got him a webmaster harness which has been great, he can hop along in a straight line almost on his on his own with us next to him incase he gets a bit wobbly and we are managing the outside stairs ok with a little help.
One thing we haven't haven't yet mastered is going to the toilet, he is still just peeing in his bed. We have taken him outside to try a few times to try but he keeps trying to go on the wrong side and nearly falls so will just stop and wont try anymore.
We are only at the beginning and I don't want to speak too soon but he's improving so much day on day that I think he's going to be ok doing life on three legs!
Tripawds has helped make this whole experience so much easier we are so much more confident just knowing what to expect, I honestly think it would be a very different journey had I not found you!
YAY COOPER!!! Work it buddy, let them spoil you because you sure deserve it! Of course you're going to be OK, you're already showing 'em aren't you?
Jess thanks for the nice words. And you have such a pawsitive attitude, way to go yourself Good job preparing and assisting him.
It's so amazing to see our dogs get around after such a major surgery, isn't it? No, they won't be perfect at it, but they try and try until they master the art of hopping on 3, without complaint. Cooper will soon make the connection that there's no leg to lift anymore, and he will find a new way to urinate. Maybe this article will help you with some ideas:
How to Help a New Tripawd Urinate After Amputation
I hope things continue on in the right direction! Keep us posted.

What a beautiful boy you have! Brownie was also a front leg amp and the harness helped so much! I live alone and Brownie was 90 lbs at time of surgery.
Just wanted to give a shot out to Cooper and sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery.
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!

Hi Guys, thanks so much for your messages and all the love!!
We have had some tough moments but I'm so happy with how Cooper is pulling through this and I'm still in awe of how they adapt and try to do everything that we are asking of them.
Coopers doing ok today, he made great progress through last week and on Friday we drove him to the park and he was great. He was very happy to sniff around where he usually gets walked everyday.
He went in for Chemo on Saturday so he was pretty out to it Saturday night and has been quieter and less interested in us, food or getting up to go outside to the toilet and just looks generally a little under the weather.
It really is up and down isn’t it! One day they are hopping about starting to look happy and you are feeling so positive and the next day when he goes to get up and hop he’s yelping and stiff on his other legs you feel heartbroken for them. Then he’s happy again and now he’s dealing with Chemo side effects.... its a roller coaster for everyone!
We are booked in for a rehab appointment on Friday, I can imagine going from three legs to four must throw everything out! So hopefully he will be feeling some relief soon in that regard.
He barked this morning and that quickly turned into a big yelp, I’ve left a message with the vet but has anyone experienced that? I’m hoping its like coughing when we have broken our ribs?
The pictures are from our park visit on the Friday before the chemo on Saturday, he was very happy to hear the word walk, very excited and wouldn't lie down in the car (we were impressed he managed to stay up going around the corners!) and and then pretty happy hopping around when we got there. Lets hope Cooper is back to feeling like this version of himself soon!!
Love, love, love these pictures!!! Cooper looks so happy and clearly is engaged.
Yes indeedy, it definitely is a roller coaster. It's still early in recovery. Vut the ups and downs do eventually settle into more ups and less and less downs.
Jist make sure you give him lots of massages after and before his little outings. It really helps prevent muscles tightness and soreness. The Rehab visit will help tremendously, especially with the stiffness when he over doesor even when he doesn't. it
Is Cooper on any pain meds? He may need a low dose on a consistent basis for a bit longer. Or maybe an anti-inflammatory, or maybe both. The random yelps, the stiffness, may be a little sign that there is still some pain that needs to be handled.
Keep jf the loop if the side effects continue too long. Sometimes the dose needs to be reduced, Cerenia needs to be added at the time of the treatment, etc. Just keep spoiling and giving him anything yummy he'll eat.
You both are doing great! And it does continue to get better and better!
Hugs

LOL I'd say Cooper is BACK! Well, he's trying. He looks so so good!
Yep, there are many ups and downs in the early days. You are doing everything right to help minimize the rollercoaster. I'm so impressed that he already went in for chemo, and is going to rehab. This is giving him every possible advantage to kick cancer's butt and be super happy and pain-free on 3. Is he showing more sparkle now that chemo is a few days behind him?
I’m hoping its like coughing when we have broken our ribs?
That is a pretty darn good description I'd say. It could have been the barking and pressure on his body, or maybe he was just tired from activity. It's still early on. Has it happened since?
Our Jerry did the same thing when he picked up his favorite hula hoop just a week or two after surgery. He shook it hard like he always used to, and yelped. It was about the only time that happened, I think he realized the cause because we sure did! We then helped him make sure not to overdo it so he could continue healing. We didn't have a rehab therapist for him so we learned a lot of things the hard way. You won't need to now. Great job Tripawd mom!
