Domino is now 4 days post op and doing great! But now with him home with us he is super clingy! Is this normal after an amputation? Is it normal Aussie behavior? He's fine in his crate, he doesn't whine or bark to be near me. But every chance he gets, he's my shadow. He wants to go wherever I go. When I sit down, he wants to crawl into my lap. If we're walking he's either right by my side or walking in between my legs! Im hoping this is just nerves post op, or Aussie behavior that can be adjusted eventually. Thanks so much everyone!

Domino had his left front leg amputate on May 13th 2014 after being hit by a car. He's now living a happy healthy life on three legs :)
Shelby became a stage ONE clinger after her amputation. She was always pretty independent (wanted to be around me but not NEXT to me ALL the time). She was a jack russell/shiba inu mix. But when I was home, had to be leaning/touching me.
It tapered off though... maybe it's still early.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Yeah, this seems to be normal initially...feeling vulnerable...a little uncertain ...not quite having cnfidence in mobility. Four days out is very, very early for any of her old traits to co e back full force. They will though.
As far as I'm concerned...just my 2¢.....enjoy every single seco d of her wa ting ro be with you! The connection she feels withnyou.....that's really lovely
Hugs to all!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I think a fair number of dogs will go through this, and they do eventually get their confidence back, it just takes time. What's important right now is for you to be a strong pack leader and remember that if you start responding to it by babying him too much, he'll become conditioned to it. I know it's hard to project the "tough love" attitude but it's so helpful for everyone. Here's a video about post amputation care that explains what I mean.
