Okay, two weeks post-op for Chet.  He has done so remarkably well.  His appetite is off a bit but other than that he gets around like a champ.  I think sometimes he looks at me and says what's wrong with you mom, I'm doing great!!  A wag of the tail and a kiss and he goes off to play.  We do start chemo next week.  Any suggestions, things to watch out for or be aware of?

Awesome news about Chet! Thanks for sharing! As for chemo, make sure you are well-stocked with Cerenia in case he gets nauseous. He probably wont, but it's good to have on hand. Here are some posts that cover your question:

Best wishes next week, we'll be thinking of you both. Keep us posted.

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR CHET...AND MOM TOO! Good job! Thanks for the great update!

Yeah, sometimes the appetite can be a little whacky from the pain meds, etc. Just keep trying really good stuff like cheeseburgers from a drive thru, chicken, steakx etc.

As far as chemo, some dogs experience lethargy and/or nausea/lack of appetite, anywhere from around day 3-5, or later. It may last a couple.of days. The vet will give you Cerenia, an anti nausea pill, that should clear the nausea up pretty quickly. Some Oncos will jave you give the Cerenia anyway as a precaution. Now, that said, many dogs don't experience any side effects at all! My Happy Hannah sailed through her four rounds of Carboplatin. On occasion, some dogs have a bit more severe symptoms and have ro stop the treatment. Once it's out of their system, they are back to normal.

That's just a general "overview". Obviously, I'm not a vet, so.please consult withnyiur vet with any questions!

Chet is letting you know you did exactly what needed to be done so he could get on with living life to the fullest! He's living in the moment with no worries, just enjoying the bliss of being Chet!

Would love to see pictures of Chet and Charley! Hint!

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

You might also be given another drug - metro something - for diarrhea.  We needed it for chemo 1, and chemo 2 but to a lesser degree.  Did not need it for #3, but I had prepared a tub of white rice and boiled chicken breast for his meals the first few days after chemo 3.  Might have helped?  After #2, oncologist also put Otis on Pepcid AC for excess stomach acid.  It has really helped.  Good luck with chemo!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Thank you so very much for the suggestions and encouragement.  Our vet is great and has been good to answer questions, but it helps to hear from the wonderful people that have been through it and lived it.  It is comforting and lets us know we can do this.  I will get you pictures of Chet and Charly (she is feeling a bit left out of things - but doing good).  Thank you all.  Tripawds and the community are amazing
