Hi all.
Wondering if any of you has experienced bruising or darkened skin patches on your dog’s bellies weeks or even a month after they have had their surgery. I might just be ultra aware of it because of the shaved section of her body and the fact that her belly hair is very sparse... but all her skin is a very healthy pink EXCEPT for that area under the surgery scar.
I keep hoping it will fade in time, but wondered if anyone has been through this.
Mike
Okay, how bout a picture? Besides it's an excuse to see her precious Corgi belly.
No swelling, no fluid, not hot to the touch, not sore, incisomlooks good? Seems like shaving the fur does sometimes show up some skin "discoloration" .there could still be some bruising too. That takes a while to clear up comp6 sometimes. Certainly check with yoir Vet if you have any concerns and send him a picture.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!
I know that our Wyatt's skin color and splotches did change over time and the vet assured us it was normal. Lots of blood vessels get severed during amputation and it could take weeks for things to settle down.
It could be pretty typical, and as long as there is no discharge, or heat coming from it, it's "probably" nothing to worry about. But as always, it's best to reach out to your vet. If they're willing to just look at a photo that would probably result in a "yep, looks like an amputation incision that's healing" conclusion.
Yes, photos please!

I stumbled on this because I had the same question more than a year later! At least for us, the vet said it’s not bruising but rather skin changes due to that area receiving much more friction now - he regularly lays on it. It’s not tender or swollen, and doesn’t bother him if we touch it. We are 6 weeks post-op.
Hi @nhbuttercup, welcome. As you can see, many situations like this are common for new amputee dogs. Thanks for sharing your experience. We'd love it if you wanted to start a new topic all about your pup, so that we can support you and answer any other questions you have. Looking forward to getting to know you!
