Hello! My dog Sir Chubbs is 6 days post front left leg amputation and a couple days ago he developed super dark bruising in his groin area. The vet said over the phone it could be from him falling when he tries to stand up. I explained to the vet that he has been walking well since 24 hours post surgery. Could it be from the towel/harness used to assist him post-op? I just want to make sure it isn't anything serious. The vet didn't seem concerned at all.
Welcome and best wished for Chubbs!
Post-op bruising is indeed quite common, and can get quite severe. Normally, however, it is centralized closer to the amputation site. Did you send your vet pics? Here are detailed instructions for adding photos to forum posts , if you want to share one here.

Hmmmm. Has your vet seen it yet? That doesn't look like something from a fall. Don't panic but definitely have them look at the photos.

Love the avatar picture of Chubbs. He is sooo cute!
Yeah, let is know what the Vet says after he sees the pics, okay?
Looking forward to hearing more about Chubbs What was reason for amp? Sounds like Chubbs is navigating thru recovery very well.

Thank you! Osteosarcoma in his front leg. I sent pictures to the vet but unfortunately they are having internet issues and said they would look at everything as soon as they can but they don't know when the internet will be working again. He also has swelling in his remaining front leg and just seems more lethargic so I wanted them to be made aware of everything. I'm trying not to be overly paranoid but I know after a major surgery that things can happen. He has been more lethargic yesterday and today but two of his favorite people (my Mom and Dad) flew back home yesterday after visiting for the holidays and he usually gets a little sad when they leave. He's still been eating and drinking and using the bathroom regularly and he's been on antibiotics since he came home at 3 hours post-op so I'm hoping that we can get this figured out. I will definitely check back in once I hear from the vet.
Eating, drinking, pottying....all good!
Some swelling j the remaining limb happens sometimes. In my non professional terms, it's fluid build up because there is no longer a leg "-takingnup the slack" so to speak. You can try and gently massage the leg.
I suppose the sling could have caused the groin bruise, but the Vet can figure that out once he sees the picture. How far away is the Vet? If close, you could drive over there and show him the picture....or even take Chubbs with you😎
As far as being a little lethargic, what pain management does he have going on, dose and frequency? All the hospital m3ds are out of his system now and thismismwhen meds usually need a little tweaking.
Hang in there! You're doing great!

I agree, his other signs are all really good! And yeah if there's any way you can get to the vet to show them, that would put your mind at ease faster. Hopefully it was just maybe that the towel sling squeezed too hard when his body fluid was looking for a place to go, and it pooled there.

The vet finally contacted me back this evening. They are convinced the bruising is self inflicted and advised that I use a cold compress on the area (which I started doing a few days ago). He still seems to be his happy self and even tries to get us to play fetch and tug of war (and then gets a major attitude when we tell him no, not yet 🤣). Trying to transition him to a weight management food since his appetite is back in full swing so we can reduce pressure on his joints. Vet would like him to drop 15lbs. Once he is healed up and staples are out that will be our next goal. Thank you everyone for your advice and well wishes!
Og good. Thanks for the update. Glad you got reassurance. Poor guy getting cold compresses on his private parts...brrrrr😱
15 lbs????? WOW! That's some serious weight loss for lil' Chubbs. I know some dogs like frozen green beans as a treat.

LOL he actually fell fast asleep in my lap after I placed the compress on. I think it had been irritating him and the coolness was comfortable. He's 85lbs right now and the vet thinks 70lbs would be ideal. Thank you for the tip about frozen green beans. We have a lot of them in the freezer so I will see if he likes them!
Oh I'm so glad the ice therapy is helping him feel better. It's an odd place for a bruise! I hope it starts clearing up in the next few days. If not I would take him in.
Did your vet give you any instructions about how to help him lose the pounds? It is a lot to drop, and it may get frustrating if you don't have good guidance. Consider booking an appointment with a canine rehab therapist. They can show you the best ways to help him lose weight and stay fit. And the Tripawds Foundation can pay for your first rehab visit too so you've got nothing to lose but those pounds on him!
I can help find a therapist if you have trouble, just let me know.
