Since Bailey has been home from his surgery on Monday, he hasn't had a bowel movement. I know that the vet said that it is normal because of the anesthesia but I wonder when he will return to normal and when to worry?
Xrays taken Jan 31, 2014, Osteosarcoma biopsy results Feb 10, 2014, Amputation Feb 17, 2014, Happy and healthy until June 2015 when a hip tumor started to form, passed away Aug 22, 2015. 18 months past amputation is pretty remarkable for this miracle dog!
I have heard that the pain meds and other stuff can make them rather constipated (and my vet was NOT at all concerned but we didn't have that problem - Shelby's always been a healthy pooper). You could probably give him some pure pumpkin (just pumpkin, not the one with spices) if you want to help things along. I think I read on this site someone waited 7 days and that was one BIG poop! Good luck!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
Yup, your vet is right, pain meds really mess up the GI system sometimes. All dogs are different in how soon after amputation surgery they will poop but most within about 3 or 4 days. You can help move things along with a little metamucil, some steamed pumpkin, olive oil or fish oil. If the big movement still hasn't happened by tomorrow I would let your vet know, a few dogs need the extra help.

I just want to add that plain greek yogurt always loosens Libby's poo. You might want to try it if the other suggestions don't work. Good luck!
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
Miralax, too, can be used.
Wow - look at us. I wonder how we'd feel if our dogs knew so much about how to make us poop?! It's kinda funny!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
LOL - personally I would love to know what we could do to make her poop a little less!!! Shelby's always been an over-achiever in that department and has been known to 'fake poo' (as in squat and go through the motions with nothing coming out).
I am still playing with Shelby's fiber intake and trying to balance the veggie bulk I add to her food (aka empty calories) and her desire for a large meal. As it is, some days, her poops are a little less than solid and I am pretty sure she isn't dealing with colitis again! 🙂

LOL at Shelby! Too funny. We got lucky and my husband took him out for a BM later today. I am not sure how much or how well he went. Hopefully things stay moving in the right direction. Thanks for all of the replies.
