Boomer appears to be having a few problems, she won't drink at all, they have her on IV fluids still and she will not go to the bathroom, They had to express her bladder. They told me she was probably depressed, well heck who would'nt be 24 hours after major surgery like an amputation. I hope that tomorrow she is doing better, I sure hope I made the right decision.

I'm so sorry to hear about Boomer.
Maybe especially because they think she's depressed, take a old shirt of yours that is well scented with your scent. Also a favorite toy.
Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers,
Denise

Hey Boomer's dad,
Don't cause yourself extra stress by second guessing now. You made your decision with love and Boomer's best interest at heart. You are giving her the best shot a long life.
Hopefully this is a just a bump and Boomer will feel better tomorrow.
Sending strong and positive thoughts your way.

We do too. And you made the right decision for sure. Just think, in the wild, Boomer would chew off her own leg to remove the pain, then hide under a tree away from the pack somewhere and not eat or drink for a while. Best wishes that she wiil get back on the road to recovery soon. Some dogs don't go for days.

Hoping that Boomer is feeling better tomorrow... Like Denise mentioned... maybe bring some of your clothing or one of Boomers toys to the clinic... Being away from home and having major surgery and drugs is pretty scary...
Angel Jake and Wolfie's Mom
Jake, 10yr old golden retriever (fractured his front right leg on 9/1, bone biopsy revealed osteosarcoma on 9/10, amputation on 9/17) and his family Marguerite, Jacques and Wolfie, 5yr old german shepherd and the newest addition to the family, Nala, a 7mth old Bengal mix kittie. Jake lost his battle on 11/9/2009, almost 8 weeks after his surgery. We will never forget our sweet golden angel… http://jakesjou.....ipawds.com ….. CANCER SUCKS!
The drugs, in and of themselves, seem to make them depressed (at the very least, different). Heck, I always think Charlie is depressed when he takes Prednisone, let alone the heavier drugs.
Can you visit? That might help. They wouldn't let me visit Charlie the first day because they didn't want him to get excited. Maybe she needs that?
Thoughts and prayers are with you and Boomer,
VQ & Charlie

Oh Dad!
I'm so sorry Boomer isn't doing well. But tomorrow is another day!
And please try to not over think anything just yet. Most pups don't do all that great afterwards. If the vet isn't giving you any dire warnings, then try to stay calm.
I once had a dog that had the femur head removed and she did horrible - wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink and wouldn't walk. The vet called and said to come and get her early because she was depressed. She was! She perked up and walked out when I saw her! The funny part - she and I rode in the back of the SUV which was a long drive home and she started whaling at the top of her lungs to me in the car! It made me cry and I would just hug her and she'd stop! And then when I would stop crying and started talking to my husband who was driving...she'd look at me and get louder with the crying! She needed to tell me all about the horrible surgery and wanted my complete attention! Unfortunately for her, I had done two other femur head removals on another dog that made the surgery look like a walk in the park. So, I knew it was her just wanting my attention.
So chin up Dad! BUT please, please keep us updated, okay?
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Sorry to hear Boomer is having a rough time. This is the sucky part of this journey, these first 2 weeks spin you all over with afterthoughts. We make these decisions for the best of our buddies, and have to keep reminding yourself if this was us having a surgery like this we wouldn't be exactly ourselves for a while either. Paws up for better days, Gus and dan
My buddy Gus had a left front amputation on April 7, 2010 and lived a great life until July 26,2010
I hope Boomer is doing better today. I can not imagine if I had had to leave Pixie at the vet after the surgery. I would need sedation myself, I am not good at that, I think I have separation anxiety. I was talking to one of the techs at our vet and she said that while in general these guys do well, that they also are not eating well or drinking too great for a bit. She said they are constatly moving the water in their bowls and rubbing it on the lips to get them to taste it and they usually will try a bit then. I had to do that witl Pixie last night and she finally starting drinking. It is so scary, isn't it? I hope Boomer turns that corner today and feels better, so you can feel better.
As much as our little ones seem to hurt and be disorientated after surgery, I think that we owners suffer greatly along with them and that we carry a lot of the stress for them. Pixie had a hard night, and as I type this in my recliner, she is laying on the floor next to me, sleeping away. And it feels so good to see that right now.
Hang in there and feel better soon, both of you.
