Hi...I have moved my posts to this forum now, as Barney had his leg amputated on 1st May.
He was supposed to be coming home tomorrow, (he is still in hospital) but unfortunately early this morning, he managed to scratch his wound and open it up!
This means he now has to have another general anaesthetic so that they can remove any infected tisuue and then re-stitch him.
All very upsetting, but he is in very good hands and so we hope to have some better news soon.
I will keep you updated.
Has anyone had the same problem with their dog after the op????
Sue. John and Barney in the UK.
Jerry never had trouble scratching his incision area, but search the forums and you'll find discussion about e-collars and t-shirts to help prevent such issues once Barney gets home. But like you said, he's in good hands for now! Thanks for the update.

Hi there- Lira and mommy from Canada here. Lira had her surgery on Wednesday April 29th . She is 5 days post amputation. My vet had her bandaged with non-stick pads over the wound, followed by a couple of bulky, disposable diapers ( nappies!), and a final covering of Vet Wrap- a sticky bandaging material that sticks to itself. I am doing bandage changes every other day. This will remain until sutures come out 2 weeks post-amp. Today her wound is warm to the touch and a bit soft- a seroma developing I guess. Her temperature is normal so no signs of infection thus far. She is NOT on an antibiotic, just Tramadol and GabaPentin. I think the bandages keep her from getting at the wound, but also have some padding in case of an "off balance " fall.
Good luck to you. Sending you wishes from across the sea!
My Leo did not ever have any problems with scratching but he is a licker and he had to wear a T-shirt because he was licking his stitches. He is the type that will lick obsessively, until he bleeds. He was not bandaged by the vet so the best bet was the T-shirt until the stitches came out. Sending well wishes for a speedy recovery your way!
