It has been 6 days since Baileys surgery and 4 days since she has been home with us and her recovery is going great! She went to the vet today to get her bandages changed and the vet was very impressed with how well she is healing and walking around even with two bad back knees. (She received a cartrophen injection for her back legs the day we picked her up. She is to receive 3 more over 3 more weeks, I think this is helping too).
I think she blew some of the nurses away with her spunk and quick walk already. I am definitely thankful for the decision I have made having this amputation and am seeing her only get better and better everyday instead of suffering. We are already going on about 10 minute walks too. I do have to slow her down though! I think she adapted so quickly because she was walking on three legs for about 5 months before her surgery. She is already trying to jump on the couches I have to keep my eye on her! Her appetite isn't there yet though so that is worrying me a bit. How long did it take others dogs to start eating again?
Also, she has had 2 experiences where she is laying down and her body is shuddering and shaking almost like she is cold and she pants quite a bit. Not sure if this has to do with the meds or pain but it does took about 20 minutes to calm her down.
Here is a picture of her in her very bright and styling lime green wrap Thanks again for everyones support.
Yeah Bailey!
The shaking could be from pain. Murphy was on 3 different meds when he came home...I wrote out a schedule to keep them alternated so that he had some pretty good coverage.
Murphy didn't have a good appetite for a little while, maybe more than a week. I cooked up some rice and poured in some chicken broth...he loved it! lol after a couple days I added in some chicken, too, for more protein. He loved the extra attention.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

Woot! Now this update really made my day, thank you for the Monday Smiles!
When she shakes, what was she doing just prior? Is it out of the blue or after she was walking around? I'm also inclined to think it's from pain. She's still not that far from surgery. Sometimes muscle twitching looks like shaking...does it happen near the missing limb? If so, that could be the brain trying to figure out if the leg is still there our not. It's pretty common, takes a while for the brain to make that connection.
As for her appetite, again, it's not that far from surgery and any medications could be interfering. Also remember that keeping a Tripawd slimmer than normal is very, very good for their joints, so probably no reason to panic as long as she's drinking and eliminating.
Keep up the pawsitive attitude! Examples like yours really give hope to others just starting out. Thanks for taking time to share.

It will be three weeks on Tuesday since Baileys surgery and she is doing AMAZING! I almost forgot what my pup was like before her cancer diagnosis a year ago. She has helped me remember with all her spunk and happiness though. The past two days we went on an hour walk!! I cant even remember the last time she was able to accomplish this. Never am I going to say I regret this amputation because I am blessed I did it and would never turn back. Here is a picture from her walk today (she was excited to see the snow today). All went well except for her fall right at the end of the walk on some hidden ice. She did a face plant and scratched her nose up pretty good
Look at her hoppy face! Awwww! Thanks for the pawsitivity, what a great way to start our day.
Where are you that you got snow? We're in the Colorado Rockies and got some the other day, it was pretty!
Keep on keeping on, you two make a great team.
And by the way, her photo is definitely going in the Tripawds photo gallery, hope that's OK. It's too good not to share!
