This is a not so happy update, as Bailey's past updates have been. A couple weeks ago, Bailey's lost her appetite. (We were really concerned because this was the 1st symptom she had that resulted in us finding out she had cancer in the first place earlier this year.) Up to this point her rechecks had showed no reappearance of cancer. We took her into the urgent care at our vet because Bailey's specialist was on vacation. At the time, they did not see what might be wrong. They did x-rays which they said looked clear. They did blood work and checked her fecal sample, and all looked good there. So, they suspected that maybe she just got a "bug" that will go away on it's own. They recommended that we switch her back to a bland diet of chicken and rice like we had her on earlier this year after she had her surgery. They said if her appetite did not come back that we should bring her back in a couple days. But, if her appetite came back then not to worry. Luckily her appetite returned and she even went back to her regular diet again, but what we noticed is that in the past she would eat her meals rather quickly. Now, she would finish her meals, but she would do it over a much longer period of time. The following week we had an already scheduled recheck with Bailey's cancer specialist so we kept that appointment. That is when we were confronted with the terrible news. Her specialist looked at the radiographs that were taken the week before and actually found a small mass in her lungs (the urgent care vet missed this) and then he did an ultrasound and found 3 small masses on her liver. Her cancer is back. 3 months prior, she was all clear. 3 months later, not anymore. The news is heartbreaking, even though we knew someday this would happen. We just hoped it would be farther down the road.
Well, we are approaching Bailey's 7 month ampuversary on Thursday. Even though we got the bad news that the cancer is back, we know that we are still very fortunate to have had these extra 7 months with her and we know that we still have some time with her yet! So, we count our lucky starts for that, believe me.
We have decided to continue with the metronomic chemotherapy she is already on (because perhaps it is at least slowing the growth of the cancer down), and we have decided once again that we do not want to do the IV chemotherapy which her vet said could be another option to try. Because Bailey's appetite is pretty good, but sometimes wains, the vet also prescribed an appetite stimulant for us to give her if needed. Bailey is doing well right now. Like I said, she takes a little longer to eat her meals and she gets tired a little faster these days, but she is still rockin' and rollin' overall. So, our plan is to keep on, keepin' on for as long as she feels up to it. We may have weeks, we may have months, who knows. What matters now is how Bailey feels. We are just going to enjoy all the time we can with her and make sure she is comfortable and happy. Then, when the time comes, the time comes.
We wish only good things for you and your tripawds,
-Mylisa & Bailey
Mylisa & Bailey - So sorry to hear this news. This darn disease just doesn't give anyone a break for long, but you're giving Bailey more time to love and be loved and that is the most important thing of all.
Thinking of you.

Mylisa & Bailey,
I am so sorry to hear this diagnosis for Bailey. Mets are in no way a death sentence. Sassy has had them in her lungs for 6 months now and she has good days and so far very few bad days. We hope that Bailey has the same. Sassy is also doing her metronomic therapy. Bailey doesn't know this is going on so all you can do is spoil her rotten I know that isn't hard to do with that cute little face.
Hugs
Michelle & Sassy
Sassy is a proud member of the Winter Warriors. Live long, & strong Winter Warriors.

I'm sorry for your bad news, but you sound like you have a great attitude.
Cancer sucks- the way we beat it is by not letting it take away the joy that dogs find in each day. You are definitely being 'More Dog'.
Sending strong, positive thoughts your way for many, many, many more happy days with Bailey.

I, too, am sorry that you have received this news. As others have said, there are many dogs that have lived quality lives for quite some time after discovering mets. Zeus had a lung met and a 'suspicious spot' on his liver at the time of diagnosis of OSA and the vet's prognosis was grim. We proceeded with amp anyway and Zeus lived for ten months after his diagnosis. And it was ten really good months! Wishing you all the best!
Lisa
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Mylisa and Bailey, more hugs and hearts coming to you. We, too, got disappointing news with our Roxie, just 4 months after ampu and chemo. But we're also focused on each day/hour/moment and giving her the best pawty she ever imagined. We're having a great week after a bad one, and I never expected things to improve. So keep up your great attitude and give that precious girl a smooch from Liz and Roxie!
Mylisa & Bailey, I'm sorry the news wasn't good but Michelle is right....it doesn't mean the end is near and Bailey only knows the joy she gets from your love. Hang in there. We are here for you.
Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13. Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14. She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self. Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14
Oh my gosh Mylisa & Bailey I'm so sorry I just saw your post. Dang that cancer! I'm really sorry.
Getting this news can really knock the wind out of your sails but you have a GREAT attitude and it will help you make the most of whatever time you have left together. After all, with cancer or without, who really knows how much time we have right? Follow Bailey's lead and you can't go wrong.
And HOPPY AMPUVERSARY BAILEY! Lucky #7 is pretty pawtastic, you are pawesome!
Keep us posted and let us know if there's anything we can do for you OK?

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you all for your positive thoughts! I know we beat the odds already because she has made it to this 7 month ampuversary! Now, hearing your stories, I have renewed hopes that even though that evil cancer is back, we may get lucky and have her with us for many months to come.
Bailey is enjoying getting spoiled these days for sure. Gotta keep up her appetite, you know. Plus, we are planning to take her to the lake again soon which is one of her favorite places! We will keep you posted on how she is doing.
