Atlas went to his first hydrotherapy session yesterday. What do you guys think from his face? Did he like it or not so much? He didn't like getting in the tank with a stranger and wanted his trainer (momma) to go with him, when I back out he tried to bolt and was none to happy when we closed him in. But I put on the work belt and filled it with treats and the clicker and we quickly went to work clicking and treating so he made it through and did his workout like the champ he is. Sorry I didn't get him in action, I needed both hands to signal commands and click with. Once when I tried to film, he started coming over the top standing on his hind legs, so I had to focus.

Yay, Atlas!

Ohhh Atlas, you are so brave. I gotta imagine that tank can be scary for a dog your size, you're almost bigger than the tank itself!
How long were you in there? Just curious.
You did GREAT though, such a brave boy!

Go Atlas go....
He will love it in no time, I have a Great Dane Strom who has been in Hydro for a couple months going twice a week, it is all I can do to keep him out of the tank when he goes it to the treatment center. They have a mirror for him to look at his self gets to see how handsome he is while working out. For him the first session was a little scary but after we all cheered for him and told him he was brilliant he got into the groove. How often will Atlas go for his workout?

Errrrr....i'm goingwith the "not so much" face! Yep, not likimg this water thing!
But no matter what you're doing Atlas, you are so very handsome!!....AND....so very brave! You are a determined, strong boy with a lot of courage. Of course' when you are so very loved and protected, that makes you fearless!
Looking forward to more videos of you "swimmng".....but with a "Move over Ryan Lockte, there's a new Olympian in town!
Lots of love,

Sally I knew you would see it in his face! He was scared and anxious. I think one because he was as big as the tank and he's never liked being confined in small spaces. (Remember the kenneling problems at hospital when he came home with wounds & injuries). And second, Daddy says that tech was nervous around him like she was afraid of big dogs and he didn't like the energy there. I watched the videos again and there it is in the end of the first one, Atlas looks back at her with his very nervous face. I know we seem like the most difficult pawrents in the world, but I promise we are not, we've just learned to be better advocates for our dogs. Something about a death sentence like cancer makes you get straight to matter and no BSing around. We greet everything with an open mind and always bring positive energy to the table with everything we encounter in this journey called life. And there is something about this journey that has made us even more in tune with our fur kids then ever before and now we really pay attention to what Atlas is telling us. We know his happy face, his anxious face, his play face, his courious face, we know his I gotta poo face, we know his body language if he doesn't like someone and if he does. We know when he has energy and we know when he needs rest. I could go on forever..... The only thing we wish we could read better is when he's in pain. Like all dogs, its their nature to be stoic and boy is this big guy stoic!
This time it was Marc who made the decision. I knew he wasn't happy when he growled... Could you please stop pounding his neck, he has wobblers, remember. I don't know what it is about big dogs but everyone wants to pound on them instead stroking nicely when petting. We have that problem with friends and family too and every time we see Atlas wince when they start pounding, so we have gotten a little tired of telling people to stop pounding and pet nicely. The energy in that office was pretty dark and depressed and as we have come to experience many times along this OSA journey, the first thing the vet said right off the bat was a barrage of can'ts, don'ts and won'ts siting those horrible statistics. This is the first time that vet met us and there standing before him is an amazing dog breaking all those "rules" and not ONE single acknowledgement of what stood before him. I stopped him mid sentence, looked him directly in the eye and said please don't site all those outdated statistics to us, we have heard them a million times and we prefer not to live in that box and choose to be more positive and optimistic. He couldn't really keep eye contact with me (red flag). Anyway, we have learned on this journey that we will cross paths with all kinds of people and that's ok, our only focus is to keep going down OUR path with Atlas. So onward and upward, we are still searching for that deep PT pool where we can get in the water with him but until then we are going to visit a nearby lake and see how we do. Oh yeah, the vet also told me that Atlas wouldn't be able to swim even with the life vest......"hope you plan on having people in the water with him because he will not be able to swim. He will flip sideways and bob under the water without that front rudder." Personally, I just feel sorry for that man.
Oh my gosh you are not a difficult pawrent at all, trust me on that one! I am so proud of you for sharing your philosophy with that vet. And yes, I agree that going through cancer strengthens your relationship even more and you do learn so much about your dog than ever before.
I can't believe the vet said what he did about Atlas not being able to swim. Was this a PT vet? Wow, that's pretty unbelievable. Guess he's never seen our Tripawds swimming videos here. How sad!
When it comes to the PT hydro tanks, one rehab vet told us that they are great tools when used properly but most of the time the parents get more of a kick out of the tanks than the dogs themselves! Lake swimming will be a blast and so much more fun!
You are wonderful advocates for Atlas, never let anyone tell you otherwise.

Are you kidding me?? Are YOU kidding ME?.? You and Marc are at the TOP of the charts whenit comes to being an advocte for Atlas...his voice! No, actually you ar OFF the charts and way up in the atmosphere somewhere!!
Patricia, EVERY single thing you said and articulated so very well is true!! We don't jave one second to waste on ths journey. And EVERY SECOND is sacred--a gift--a treasure...and we tripawd parents cannot afford to let ANYTHING interfere with every aspect of their well-being! And we won'ont!!
People think they "know" their dog? Ha! We "tripawd people" know every single nuance and what they mean at a depth far greater than we ever could have imagined! I've always been tuned into my dogs...their energy.....their energy in different situatins with different people. Ha! Everything pales in comparison when you are "tuned in" and "hear and see and feel" our tripawds communicate how the feel about any and every thing! Your understanding of Atlas and what's good for him--whst works for him--is spot on!! You TRULY know your boy and are tuned ito his energy like no one else.
Cleary that vet is does NOT kow Atlas....or any other tripawd for that matter!
OK, this thing iis gonna cut off again. I am just soooooo proud of you and Marc for staying the course of whst's best for Atlas! You both are so "tuned in" to the energy of others. A negative energy around our dogs?? NO! Our seconds are sacred and that kind of energy is not allowed!!
I am just so proud of you! Not surgprised at all.......just PROUD:-)
Thank you for passng a good strong dose of courage or way by showingus all how we can even be better advocates! Stay tuned.......in!
Love and admiration,

Way to stand up for Atlas!!!! What is with all these Debbie Downers?!?!?! Atlas has beaten the odds and will continue to do so - maybe just not in a pool!!
Spirit Shooter was a Miniature Australian Shepherd who was diagnosed with a MCT and had a LF amp 1/28/13 at 13-1/2 years old.
Shooter crossed the Bridge on 8/28/13, his 7 month ampuversary and two weeks from his 14th birthday.
Yepper it was a PT vet, couldn't believe my ears with the swimming comment either. I think we've hit all the Debbie downers just because of Atlas' size. We've come to know that now at this point in our journey and the dozens & dozens of vets we've seen. Some are just so ingrained with the stats they can't see outside the box, even when there is proof standing in front of them. Some have even talked to us with enthusiasm about how "smaller" dogs are very successful amputees but still dont acknowledge Atlas' success. It's funny because some you can actually see them physically struggle to get their head around it. For some folks, we know that's how they live, it's safer, but for scientists/vets we've found it particularly sad. I for one would not want to live a life that I couldn't see, hear and feel all experiences that crossed my path. When I leave this planet, it will be with NO regrets or what if's!
Well, that's just so weird that a PT vet was such a doubter. But you know, a lot of people live within the boundaries of science and don't leave room in their life for the miraculous things that happen which just can't be explained. That's OK but I'm like you, I choose not to live that way and instead surround myself with pawsitivity, hope and optimism instead. Atlas represents all of that to those of us who embrace it.
Keep on keepin on Atlas, you are changing the world one narrow-minded doctor at a time!
