RECLAIMING THE BED!!!! 🙂 MONUMENTAL POOP YAAAAAY! Today is aa great day!! 🙂 No wonder he looks so comfy all stretched out on his bed!
I kept scrolling back up to compare the other pocture of his "spot" with the one you posted today. Looks pretty much the same to me. Possibly...possibly...it's maybe even darker, but doesn't appear any bigger. Keep an eye on it and send your Vet a pic in the morning. If he feels it's an issue, he'll have you bring him in.
And one more rime: YAAAAAAAAAY FOR. M O N U M E N T A L.
Hugs!

I'm just catching up. Initially I was secretively hoping Astro and Eurydice would fall in love. But then there's Otis... Can't forget about Rosie... All lovely dogs with great families. But then I come to realize this isn't a match-making site... Still, I hope some of them meet one day and send us photos.
I'm happy to hear Astro is doing so well with his recovery. Keep making your mama proud Astro.

How's the big guy doing today? Great I hope!
Otis - 121 lbs pre amp - 114 lbs post amp and now 118 lb Great Dane - English Mastiff X. Started limping on 12/24/16. Diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 12/28/16 - amputation of front left leg on 1/6/17. Stitches out and 1st round of Chemo on 1/19/17. 2nd round of Carboplatin on 2/10/17 - 3rd round on 3/2/2017. 4th round was scheduled for 3/22/17 - however due to low WBC postponed - 4th Chemo completed on 3/28/17. Had breathing difficulties, stayed in Tufts ICU overnight. Due for 2 more rounds of Chemo but we are opting to go with homeopathy with Dr. Loops instead.
Astronaut is doing pretty darn well on limited drugs. I have noticed he seems to develop significant spasming in his chest around the good leg, especially when he is lying down. It doesn't seem to bother him, but it's unnerving. I've been putting warm compresses on him, which seems to help. Other than that, he is eating like a champ and getting around easier. He's back to dreaming his kangaroo dreams, where he kicks like a maniac as he hops through his dreams. ZZzzzzzzzzzz
Look at thst sweet boy with such smoochable jowls 🙂
The spasms should subside eventually. The brain and nerve endings will soon adjust to the leg not being there. Glad that tjey aren't bothering him and the warm massaging helps.
Keep on hopping Astro! 🙂

Astro, you are a cutie-pie. Mosby still has "spasms" in the muscles of his amputated leg. The vet says that for him they aren't spasms in the technical sense, since they aren't like clockwork, just his brain trying to move the leg. Like Astro, they don't seem to bother him, and massage seems to help. Keep resting up and recovering, Astro, you're doing great!
"Kangaroo dreams"....so cute! Never thought of those movements that way, how adorable.
He's just kickin' butt. I think as long as the spasms don't result in sharp cries, he's not having any phantom pains. The compresses and light massage is so good for him. If you haven't already be sure to check out these posts for massage tips.

I love the way he's lying in that pic, with his foot underneath his chin. He looks so calm and thoughtful with that faraway look in his eyes. Sounds like he's doing fantastically well. Meg had some minor spasms too. They didn't bother her at all, and in the end they just settled and stopped.

Well, we had a LONG night last night with some severe phantom leg crazies and a lot of crazy scratching attempts. Astro woke me up around 1am and I thought he was having a seizure because he kept trying to flop up from his side on the bed and 'chew' on the limb that isn't there anymore. Kind of like what we call little nibbling 'fleabites' (which he also does to show love). But, although it didn't seem to hurt him physically (his chest and scar were spasm central, but not painful), he was obviously mentally confused and distressed. When not trying to find the leg, he would start frantically scratching with his powerful hind leg and nearly ripped his sutures out before I laid on top of him to get him to stop. We stayed up all night doing massages and warm compresses and he finally calmed around 7am. I stuck him back in his camo onesie today and that seems to have helped with the urge to scratch, but now I'm hoping this is not going to be a repeat night. Any other ideas for calming/soothing my kid when this happens? He gets his stitches out this week. Other than this, he's been great!
Cheers,
Kat and Astro
First of all, Mr Smoochable Mug Astro looks so darn cute in his onesie! 🙂 And I love how his toy matches his onesie. A very classy boy!
Just wondering if he is having any staple/stitch actually causing the issue? Maybe pulling or touching a nerve, maybe?? Just seems like phantom limb pain wouldn't be lasting several hours.
Don't have any insight or any helpful solutions. Hopefully others will.

Eeek I shouldn't have said he wasn't having phantom pains! Hopefully that's not what it was, so sorry about last night.
I'm with Sally, could there be anything in the area that's bothering him? Maybe there IS a flea somewhere? I dunno really. But yeah, phantom pain is generally accompanied by sudden, sharp crying out and usually subsides for a bit, it's not a continuous thing (usually). He's still on gabapentin right? Maybe the dose needs adjustment? Sorry I know this isn't much help!

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear Astro had a bad night. Maybe he needs meds adjusted so he sleeps more. I hope he has a better time tonight!

Today was "get your stitches out" day! The incision is still funky and crusty with some flap spots, but hopefully it will be less itchy now and I can neosporin the funky spots. His crusty, necrotic spot has scabbed nicely. Anyway, progress is progress! And VET trips get rewarded with bacon sammiches!
I love the excitement in Astro's eyes as he chomps down on his yummy sammich!! 🙂 🙂
YAAAAAAAAAY FOR STITCH REMOVAL!! 🙂 🙂
Hopefully she won't have any more rough nights and hopefully her incision will heal faster now. No oozing? No stinky foul smell? Vet still not worried about the little spot of dead skin?' Sounds like NO is the answer to all three questions YAY!
Yes indeedy, progress IS progress!! For my Happy Hannah it took three weeks before I felt like I could say I did this FOR herand not TO her!!
Nurse Rosie is being such an attentive Nurse. Sooo sweet!
Astro, ice cream really goes well with yummy bacon sammiches!!
