Hi all,

I've been following the Tripawds community since my kitty, Murphy, was diagnosed with a leg tumor a month ago. He started limping in January and we went to a vet who told charged us $100 to tell us his tendon was hurt. He was put on a no-jumping regime and got worse. This was the same vet who told us our 14-year-old Golden Retriever was doing great while she was coughing and vomiting. A week later we had to put her down. Not happy with that vet at all. We went to another vet at the same clinic who felt a mass on his leg joint and took expensive x-rays to tell us we had three possibilities: either it was a massive infection, cancer, or the biggest case of arthritis he'd ever seen. We never saw the x-rays. He said he's know more with a 500 dollar biopsy. We couldn't do that. Murphy was put on antibiotics for 2 weeks to see if it was an infection and baby aspirin. When asked how much amputation would cost, the vet said somewhere in the range of 2-3 thousand dollars, which we knew we couldn't do. He basically told us there was no chance he'd survive if it was cancer. After a few weeks of Murphy vomiting, we called a vet tech family member and were told that aspirin is awful and 3 thousand was ridiculous and that ended the relationship with that vet.

We found a new vet a month ago and he has been amazing. He got the x-rays from the previous vet and showed them to us, very clearly explaining that infections didn't look like this, arthritis didn't look like this, and aspirating the lump would tell us more. We aspirated it and got a confident diagnosis that it was bone cancer. What exact variety we didn't know. Amputation was what we could afford, at only 500 dollars. We talked to the vet tech family member and decided to go through with it if a lung x-ray showed no visible lumps. It didn't, and yesterday, 8/6/15, Murphy went in to surgery to get his back left leg amputated.

He is home now, incredibly stoned on his medication and trying to get in to trouble at every turn, as usual. He is doing okay, it seems. The scar is quite gnarly and the cone of shame --or "Elizabethan collar", as the care sheet calls it--makes him look fluffy, cute and slightly pathetic, but Murphy the Maine Coon seems to be doing okay.

I am scared that it is going to come back. Very scared. I think that taking it one day at a time is the trick and loving him as much as possible. Caring for him is difficult because he doesn't seem to grasp the fact that his leg is gone. Maybe that's the morphine. He doesn't want to settle down if he isn't laying on myself or my mom. The next seven days are going to be hell.

I just thought I'd introduce the two of us and see how things go. I can't think about the horrible things right now. Now I need to be with my baby as much as possible.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Murphy and family, welcome to the club nopawdy wants to join. So, was he diagnosed with osteosarcoma? If so, have you see Jill the Cat's blog? She had osteo and it's been over two years and she's doing great! See:

http://jillsjou.....pawds.com/

I'm sorry you went through an awful time with those vets. The good thing is you now have great care! Yay for getting another opinion (or two or three!).

The next few days don't have to be bad, they aren't always. It's good to be prepared but hope for the best. Yes, the pain meds can make him crazy but things do get better.

It's late here so I'm gonna run but hang in there, others will chime in shortly. I hope this weekend is restful. Keep us posted OK?

Hi Murphy and mom. Sorry to hear about the diagnosis but finally things are moving forward. Recovery will get better and once the stitches are out it will be smooth sailing and Murphy will get stronger and simply amaze you with his ability to adapt.

My cat Mona had her front leg amputated June 2014 and her recovery was easy for her and hell for me. She went from sleeping and cuddly to racing around the house and even escaping for over 24 hours. I think she was nuts from the medication.

The most important thing is Murphy needs to do now is sleep a lot to recover. He may get bored and want to explore so take him to an area where he can look out the window and start playing with toys. Note that there will be bruising, so don't be too concerned. Mona didn't wear a collar, which I think is unusual. She seemed to love it when I put warm/cool baby facecloths on her surgery area.

When they are drugged they aren't themselves. He will quickly adapt to walking, running and jumping. Eventually you might want to place stairs or boxes for Murphy to climb up to couches, beds, etc. It's harder for rear leg amputees to jump up and easy to go down. As a front leg amputee Mona did many faceplants going down so she quickly learned to use the boxes. I've seen her use other techniques such as "leg slide belly flop"! Good thing she has a little padding there.

I love Maine Coon cats! I had one which was part Maine Coone - he was on the small side but had all the features including the comical personality. He'd race me upstairs when it was time for bed and was great at playing hide and seek. I look forward to seeing photos of Murphy. Keep in touch.

Hi Murphy and his humans!

Really sorry about your lpss of your dog and all the rotten luck you've had with vets. I know you and Murphy have a really good Guardian Angel watching over you now though.

You've gotten great advice!

Just remember that Murphy does NOT have a time frame stamped on his cute little kitty butt!! And you jave it exactly right...living one day at a time and making the most out of every single moment! Murphy isn't worried about a thing!!

And yes, the next week or two can be full of ups and downs, but once recovery takes place Murphy will be thrilled to have that painful leg gone! For now, even though it's hard, Murphy needs to rest!

Spoil, lpve and have fun!! When you can, we would love to see some pictures.

You have a great attitude! Hang in there! We are here for you, okay?

Hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Morning update:

Last night was hell. He escaped his Macguyvered confinement area and tried to be with his two mommies all night. We ended up needing to put him in the bathroom for the night. He really likes to climb in the sink and drink water from the faucet so we put a laundry basket over the sink and used copious amounts of Gorilla Tape to make sure he couldn't get it open. All night he whined. Tonight I'm thinking we'll try to use the big golden retriever crate as a bed area for him and I'll sleep next to it if necessary.

I'm getting the hang of picking him up while avoiding the incision.

He goes through these bouts of restlessness where he wakes up from sleeping and thrashes around. I hope it's just the medication--buprenorphine. It is really scary to be next to him while he does it because he stands up and loses his balance and it's very very concerning to me.

I'm going to attempt to post some pics of him a little later. I've got a job interview to head to in a bit so my lovely mother is going to be on kitty duty while I'm gone. When I get home, There will be pictures of my baby kitty on here for all to see!

Thank you all for your support. It means the world to me.

I would say that kind of behavior is pretty normal for a kitty on pain medication. Remember though, if it really concerns you it always helps ease your fears to let the vet know what's going on.

Glad everything else is going well. Yes it IS a challenge to keep a kitty calm and quiet during recovery but it sounds like you have some great tricks up your sleeve.

Hope the interview went well and you got the job!

Hi, and welcome to you and Murphy.... You have definitely found the best place for wisdom, experience, and support.

Maine Coons are such great cats, how old is he? I also have to say, I love the name on your profile pic! Typogoddess makes me giggle, but I am sure there is a story behind the name..... 🙂

So far, it sounds like Murphy is doing very well, and everyone here has given great advice..... My sweet angel Tripawd was a pup, so I don 't have much in the way of advice or any kind of experience, but what Sally said is so true, none of our Tripawds have a date of expiration, so just take one day at a time, and enjoy all those days along the way.

Keep us updated on Murphy, and his continuing progress, and post some pics when you get a chance....

Just wanted to jump in here and send out a welcome to you and your pack.

I have nothing to add regarding kitties other than I adore them. My pack consists of the doggy variety so I have no experience to share. I'm just here to listen and support you with any decision you make.

I'm truly sorry about the loss of your 14 year old retriever, just a beautiful pup.

xoxo

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.
