I decided to start a new thread since that topic was older and I'm excited to announce we are now into week #3 of recovery! Allie's stitches came out 3 days ago and we are still managing gabapentin pain med. She's progressively lasting longer on the gabapentin each day (8 hrs to 10 hrs to 12 hrs) and is getting back to being herself more and more. Her incision looks great and no leakage thank goodness. She's instigating play time multiple times a day which to me is a very big sign of pain reducing. sp_hearticon2

Question: when was it generally ok for your dog to be able to access the incision area (not wear the cone all the time?) our vet hasn't been very definitive and I might call to ask but wanted your advice from experience, please?

Oh yay! Thank you for updating in a new topic. It really sounds like Allie has made fantastic progress. Getting off the pain meds in a slow routine is just fine, many new Tripawds have to do that. It's awesome the incision is doing well and she's got her sparkle back too. All great signs!

Generally it's my understanding that it's OK to leave the incision area uncovered/unguarded once the area is completely healed and not moist or pink. That goes the same for any procedure. Incision areas do get itchy though, so an anti-itch topical may be helpful. Ask your vet what they think and let us know.

YAY FOR ALLIE....AND YOU!  Good job of staying the course and advocating  for your Allie!  She has def turned the corner and it only gets better and better!

So yeah, with the stitches out and the incision  healed, she should be fi e with the cone.  As Jerry said, just watch for any signs of her wan to scratch ot and you can check with the Vet if she needs some sort of anti itch.

So happy to read this update. 😁Give her a smooch for us😘
