My dog is currently on chemo and his weight can fluctuate by a pound or two each week depending on how his appetite has been that week. He was a thin but fit 55-60 pounds before he got sick and now weighs around 42-44 pounds, so he's lost almost 25% of his original weight. I guess what I mean is, don't worry too much about the drop from 76 to 71 pounds. It's better than he is a little thinner than a little heavier and it may take his weight some time to stabilize again.
Oops - back to grean beans!
Just an update - Friday Ajax weighed in very low at 71.1 lb. This was down from 72.3 the week before and 73.7 at the beginning of chemo a month ago. He had no change in appetite but was losing weight anyway, and seemed a little more tired than usual.
So I decided I'd feed him more, and I did it a little quickly because we have to go out of town the end of this week and I wanted him to be stabilized before I left. His energy skyrocketed and he seemed much happier.
But - Oops. Weighed in today - less than a week later - at 74.5! Proving, once again, that if there is one thing I know how to do, it is gain weight!
Should be easy to get him back down, but I just thought I'd add this in case anyone reads this post later for their own purposes. I didn't see how weight could fluctuate dramatically with no change in appetite, but apparently this is normal on chemo, as everyone said above.
