Hi all,
Just to catch you up - my last post was after someone contacted us wanting a "limping" dog for a film. Unfortunately, the shoot was rained out, so Ajax didn't get to be a star.
Good news update: 2 more doses of Palladia and we are done with chemo! So far, so good - no sign of any of the various cancers Ajax has had. To catch everyone up/refresh memories:
1. Chondrosarcoma diagnosed in right rear leg and benign thymoma found in chest in June 2010. Thymoma removed.
2. Right rear leg amputation July 2010, determined to be curative; no further treatment. If it were to spread, chondrosarcoma would typically spread to lungs; yesterdays' xray shows lungs still clean.
3. Mast cell tumor removed from left flank November 2011. Clean margins; whole tumor removed. Grade II with half high, half low markers. Spleen, liver and lungs all clean. Treatment recommended was 6 months chemo as follows:
-- 3 months traditional chemo and Prednisone; then
-- 3 months Palladia and Prednisone
4. Today we saw the oncologist for the last time of this Palladia treatment - only one more dose to go. Ajax is feelin' fine (excepting for being a starving monster because of the prednisone), lung xrays clean, no sign of cancer - as best as we can tell, it is gone and after 6 mos. cancer-free the chances of a mast cell cancer returning decrease significantly. Yay!!
Now for the question - in all 6 months, Ajax hasn't missed a treatment and his bloodwork has always been "great". Today he was "slightly" anemic, which the oncologist said was not surprising after 6 months of chemo; she said it would fix itself after the last dose of chemo and there was no reason to do anything to treat it.
Other than going out for a celebratory (and healing) burger, anyone have any other ideas?
Ajax says "it has been a long and hungry road to this burger and would everyone please celebrate with me (assuming mom can still afford the burger after all my doctors"
This is great news!!! Ajax, tell your Mom you know she has enough money for a burger because Tripawd owners are the type of people that would skip as many meals as possible to keep their pups healthy! I hope you enjoy your burger tonight, you've earned it! (Be sure to get cheese on it!!!)
Well, yeah, Mama has to celebrate too! So, tell Mama to get an adult beverage to go with her burger and tell her to also maybe share some ice cream with you for dessert. You earned it!
Keep the good news coming!
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom
Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!
That is aweseome news for Ajax. Definitely deserves a big celebration. Have a burger with extra cheese!
Magnum: 30th May 2002 to 5th May 2012. Lost her back left leg to osteosarcoma on 5th Sep 2011. Lung mets found on 20th Mar 2012 but it was bone mets in the hip that ended her brave battle. Magnum's motto - "Dream as if you'll live for ever, live as if you'll die today" (James Dean). Loyal, loving, courageous and spirited to the end. My beloved heart dog, see her memoirs from Rainbow Bridge ...... http://princess.....pawds.com/
ajax, sorry the movie appearance was a bust..but in the big picture, you are a shining star!!!!!!!! so glad you are doing so well - hope you enjoy that burger!!! we're celebrating for you here in ET!!!!!
charon & spirit gayle
Life is good, so very, very good!!! Gayle enjoyed each and every moment of each and every wonderful day (naps included). She left this world December 12, 2011 – off on a new adventure.
Love Never Ends
I had no idea that Ajax had been through so much! He's a superstar. I am so happy for you. I'd say that an extra large burger with fries and a vanilla milkshake is in order! Celebrate and enjoy every day.
K, an 8 year old chocolate lab, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the radius and ulna on 12/23/11. She had stereotactic radiation to kill the bone tumors, and 3 rounds of carboplatin. On 3/16/12, lung mets were found. We tried several different kinds of chemotherapy to slow the lung mets but none worked. Finally, mets appeared at other sites, including her spine. She earned her angel wings on July 15, 2012. K changed my life, and I'll never forget her. Our/my journey is chronicled at romp-roll-rockies.blogspot.com.
My goodness, I also didn't know that Ajax had such a history. Sounds like he deserves his own burger franchise! Congratulations on finishing chemo - Zeus said he will gladly have some fries in your honor!
Zeus was a Husky mix diagnosed with Osteosarcoma at age 11. A visible lung met and suspicious spot on his liver meant a poor prognosis-six weeks was our vet's best guess. We decided to fight for our boy and his right front leg was amputated on 12/1/11. We did six rounds of chemo, changed his diet and spoiled him completely rotten. We were blessed with 10 great months after diagnosis. Against the odds, the lung met remained a single met and grew very little over those months. A wonderful furbaby with the most gentle spirit, he fought with a strength that we never imagined he possessed. We have no regrets...

Glad to hear Ajax is doing so well! Burgers all around!
Sorry, can't answer your anemic question...but I'm sure you vet knows best.
Comet - 1999 to 2011
She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
Congratulations Ajax!!! I hope you get all the burgers with cheese you want dude!!!!
Sorry your super star event was rained out...
Tracy, Maggie's Mom
Maggie was amputated for soft tissue sarcoma 10-20-09
Maggie lost her battle with kidney disease on 8-24-13
Thanks everyone for celebrating with me! We do not have drive through in NYC but we sat outside at a restaurant where my picture is. The name of it is "Fred's" and Fred was a black Labrador who came from the same place as me. We had a burger - one for mom, one for me (no bun) and I ate it off the fork and people came by to pet and talk to me. I wagged my tail and showed off. It was big fun, except mom forgot to get me cheese.
Lotsa love,
Ajax
Wow Ajax, you are absolutely a STAR! After all you've been through, to come out of all of this with slightly anemic blood counts, well, I'd say that's pretty PAWESOME! Wooo hoo!
I hear that more MEAT is good for anemia...howzabout a cheeseburger every single night this week to get rid of that anemia? Pawty on!
Hey speaking of food, what's your diet like these days?

Well, I'm not going to lie - while on prednisone I have been getting lots of burgers and salmon and other good meats. But my diet has stayed the same kibble it always was - my oncology doctor strongly recommended against making any change to food during chemotherapy. I know puppies here get all kinds of fancy meals ... I've been meaning to talk to my mom about it but her doctors are not terribly concerned.
Maybe another burger tonight since you say so ......but I have to stay trim for my three legs!
