Welcome to you and your sweet saint Mandi. Your post has been approved and we look forward to following Mandi's journey and help you navigate through recovery.

Just a couple of tips that might work for you. Sorry for the short reply as I'm headed out. You might try puppy pads out on the porch and try and bring up some of the dirt or grass, Etc where she's used to peeing. Depending on how long it's been since she has urinated, your vet can show you how to express her bladder if necessary. There are also videos on YouTube on how to do that.

Does she have to go up and down steps to go to normal potty place? You can try helping her out of those spots with a sling made from a towel.

How long has it been since she peed

Pain meds might make her feel a little loopy right now so her balance and Mobility might be affected some. Even if she has to go while she's laying down, that's okay.

Again sorry for that quick reply. Just know that you're exactly where you need to be here on the site for more information and tips.

Hugs

Hi Grace and Mandi, welcome! We are glad you found us too. That's wonderful news she is doing so well after surgery.

So it sounds like you live in a walk-up building? Is that why she is unable to go potty outside? How far is it to her usual spot? Is there any way you can get help to assist her to that spot, by using a harness or homemade dog sling.

If you have your porch set up, do you have any artificial grass or other places that feel more "natural" for her to urinate? Remember, you are undoing 9 years of potty training so it may not be easy for her to go to the bathroom where she's always been taught she should not. But you are right to be concerned about her getting a UTI, so good job asking great questions!

Here is a post that we wrote about encouraging a dog to urinate after surgery:
