I first want to thank everyone who has shared their stories on this website. Over the last couple of months I didn’t It has helped to make me not feel so alone.
I have a sweet/goofy 5yr old bloodhound that in late December was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his left hind leg (in the fibula), he was schedule for surgery to repair his CCL, when it was discovered. The surgeon wasn’t entirely sure, so she did a bone biopsy. The results came back the day after Christmas. Dealing with holidays we took the first avail ever appointment and had his leg amputated on Jan 2nd. He has been a super dog through out it all! His trust and love has never decreased, even thou I wasn’t always trusting Myself with the decisions I was having to make.
He completed five rounds of chemo, two days after his last appointment his remaining three legs started to swell. The next day his oncologist did chest and leg x-rays confirming the lung mets and Hypertrophic osteodystrophy (HO). She gave one week to one month, this coming Monday will be one month. It is hard trying to understand something that isn’t understandable. Throughout I have heard for the vets that his breed, location of the primary tumor were all a atypical, which leaves me with asking why! It is hard to find information on Hypertrophic osteodystrophy, unless it is about a puppy and it doesn’t look like it is common or mentioned here.
I am sorry for anyone pawrent that has to watch their fur baby go through this. Our time with them is never enough ❤️🐾
Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.
I'm sorry you are at this point with Luke- HO is nasty! It is not commonly seen here but there have been a few cases.
Here is a fourm thread on Hypertrophic Osteopathy with some links to information. You can see it hasn't been updated in about 3 years.
How is Luke doing now? Has he had any treatments? On any meds?
What can we do to help you and Luke on this part of the journey?

He is on pain meds (gabapentin & codeine) and carprofen. Plus I am giving him turmeric treats I made and the mushroom supplement to help boast his immune. We have our good moments and then there are the tougher ones. I will not make him suffer because I am not ready to say good by, It is just hard to know how much pain he is in, we go on little walks twice a day and our sitting in the sun right now together. He has started a dry/hack, but not all the time and needs help getting up. He drinks and eats great, I think he loves being served 😊
I really just wanted to say thank you! My husband and I have found this site incredible valuable, for stories to products. Unfortunately osteosarcoma wasn’t on our radar, we didn’t get a clear understanding of what was happening at the beginning. We realize our vets were busy with their families durning the holidays, it was just bad timing.
I appreciate the link and you replying so quickly.

This horrid disease just sucks. No ,matter how hatd we try, this brutal disease makes it's own rules and takes twists and turns that cannot be forseen.
When you can catch your breath, the link Karen gave you will give you some good I for action AND some hope. Sadly, some dogs succumb too quicly, but, as you will see some beat the odds!
So talk to your Onco about some options, especially since newer breakthroughs are possibly available. It also sounds like their are maybe better options s for pain management now too.
Seemingly Luke has no dide effects from the mets and is doing well in all areas (other than the obvious with the swelling). Luie is NOT. statistic and who he is as a dog is never factored I to these "generalized statistics ".
What options did the Onco suggest? Especially ways to manage the pain in the leg. We have another dog with a jaw tumor who is starting biophosates (sp). It can help reduce pain among other positives.
No matter what...a d you already know this because you have done this since January..live in the NOW, in the present. Do not let this piece of crap disease inter with your time together. Luke sure isn't!!
Bloodhounds, as he tle as they are, are strong and determined pips. I was owned by one once also ('Cornbread"). That Warrior type inner strength is a plus that may jist give Luke an edge.
We are here for you in any way you need. And, we must have pictures of your precious boy. The avatar shows a whole lot of sweet Soul wrapped up in that handsome Boodhound body of his❤

Hi, Luke is adorable! Love the ears!
So when Brownie was diagnosed with OST the vet gave him three months. Just like you when the 3rd month hit I was freaking out. Then came month four, five, six, seven for a full year. Even though are vets are very needed and valuable they really can't say how long an animal has. They are going by statics. What is most important is Luke is here now, so embrace each day. My Brownie taught me that when going through this journey.
What I learned from this community is dogs don't know days on a calendar. They live in the moment. We call it Be More Dog . Great book by the way.
Just embrace each day, and Luke will follow your lead. Spoil him rotten. And don't count the days, take this time to enjoy each other.
I'm sorry I don't know anything about "Ho" but I am sure other will chime in, and Karen is a wonderful source of information.
Sending positive thoughts your way.....
My Beautiful Beloved Brownie was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on February 26, 2019. With all odds against him he lived an additional one year and eight days with amputation, love, and prayer. I was honored to be his mom, and I have never been so proud! He will live forever in my Heart!

Just wanted to add that Brownie's vet said to give him Robatusim for his hack, and it did help.

Here are some pictures of Luke, from last summer. He is a big boy,, he was 150lbs before his amputation. Yes, he has a fighting spirit! He is our second bloodhound we have been lucky to have. Thank everyone for your support and advice. We are opening to trying anything, without putting him through any additional surgeries. Our oncologist didn’t have any other suggestions, she said we could try a different type of chemo, but felt that won’t change his quality of life. But, I have put a call into her about other med options after reading the other forum. Sorry if there are to many pictures, I love taking pictures and he is my favorite subject!
And what a subject he is! He looks like one happy Dog! Love, love the ears.
It's great he has a fighting spirit. I can see in the photo how much you love him, and he loves you as well.
By the way, never too many photos of the handsome Luke!

Oh my gosh, never too many pictures in this community, he is gorgeous!
I’m so sorry you are dealing with H.O., I remember the first time I heard about it with one of our members (Abby) and was stunned. I hope with all my heart that you and your oncologist are able to come up with some things that will keep him comfortable and enjoying more time with you. What a love.
Let us know what kind of treatment you decide to try, and spoil that boy rotten.
