Callie is almost 5 months post op for a hind leg amputation for osteosarcoma. She has been doing great, but over the past week we've noticed she seems to have a little trouble getting up at times. It is not all the time, but maybe a few times a day. She limps around for the first 5 - 10 steps before finally getting the back leg up. Its hard to tell if she continues to limp b/c it is the only back leg she has, so her walk is a little funny anyway. Her cancer troubles began with a limp, so we are wondering if it spread to the other leg now, or if its something else....the change to cold weather affecting her joints, is she developing arthristis, etc? If a treat is involved, she seems to have no trouble getting up! = ) And once she is up and going, it seems to be ok...she is eating normally and doesn't cry like she is in pain. It just breaks my heart to see her having trouble when it does happen. Callie is a shephard/lab mix and almost 8 years old. We have not taken her to the vet yet, as we're trying to avoid a large bill around the holidays...I figured we'll give her another few days to see if it continues or gets worse.
Has anyone else had similar troubles....what was the outcome?
Poor Callie! That sounds like it hurts. My first unscientific, non-medical professional thought is that she's overdoing it with the exercise, or it could be the start of arthritis due to overuse. How much exercise is she getting? And what type?
One more thought: what is her weight like? Is she overweight?
Is she on any medications that can alleviate the pain until you can see the vet? Metacam, Rimadyl, anything like that?
