Hello! This site was recommended to me by our oncologist and I have been on it all morning! Our terrier mix Calvin is almost ten years old, and started limping about a month ago. We assumed it was just from his daily walks, or a strain. After multiple visits to our local vet and no improvement we were referred to a specialist. They were immediately concerned and we did a biopsy that’s same day. Results came back as a soft tissue sarcoma, high grade. His mitotic level was 55 per 10 hmp. Our vet recommended amputation of his hind leg, and then further treatment with chemo. We did an ultrasound and thankfully the cancer hadn’t spread anywhere else. We did the amputation this Thursday, so he is currently two days post op. He is doing well so far, walking and eating, although he is showing some pain and it is hard to see him like this. I’m more concerned with what the future holds though. Anyone have any high grade sts success stories ? If so what did you do? The options seem endless as far as supplements and diets and different forms of chemo. I read about the at home pill chemo, and the oncologist said she’s like to do 5 doses of the IV chemo every 3 weeks then maybe transition to the pill chemo. Even with all this treatment they are predicting it’ll reoccur somewhere else around a year post op. It’s just devastating news. Any advice or success stories would be greatly appreciated. I am praying I didn’t put him through all of this to have live a few more months 😢. Should also mention we sent the entire leg off to be biopsied so i am holding onto a little bit of hope that it will be a lower grade then they initially thought.
Hi and welcome! I wanted to get your post approved so others can chime in. I’m on my phone and traveling but will be back later, so in the meantime check out Jerry’s Required Reading List https://tripawd.....ding-list/ for some insight into things like prognoses and life as a Tripawd. I will be back with input soon!
p.s. What kind of pain meds is your dog taking? Be sure to stay ahead of the pain so it doesn’t get out of control (much harder to control if it does).

Thank you I will check out the reading list! They did a nerve block during the surgery, not sure how long that lasts, he is on tramadol every 8 hours and gabapentin twice a day. His pain seems controlled I would say but still present, not sure when I should expect for him to turn a corner as far as the pain goes.
