Oh oh oh! We are in looooooove!!!! What a sweetie. I can't wait to check out your blog.

As far as lying down while going potty...do you mean she is doing this only when urinating or when doing #2 as well?

One thing to keep in mind, is that when a dog starts out so young in life as a three-legger, they are not just figuring out how to coordinate their body mechanics in general, but dealing with the awkwardness of being a Tripawd too. See, older Tripawds already know how to use their bodies, whereas younger ones are just learning. We've been told by rehab vets that exceptionally young Tripawds will take longer to get coordinated, so I have all the confidence in the world that she will become stronger with time and figure out how to potty standing up.

She's so cute!  Love her!

I have to imagine that she'll adapt and not recline so much when going to the bathroom.  I assume she didn't do this prior to amputation?  If not, then maybe she's just trying something out, since she knows "better."  If this is how she does her business...what's the problem?  Does she mess herself?  If not, heck, I'd just roll with it!  She's such a little trooper!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Hi! I'm Shine's Mom. Cora is ADORABLE! So glad that your adoption wwent through! She's one amazing pup! Shine is 12 weeks now. He is still learning how to be a tripawd too. he was in an accident and is a front right amp as well! He needed a lot of help at first going potty. We held him in the position, and he would go. Then he started walking away from us when we tried to hold him, that's when we knew he needed some independence. It may be different for Cora though! If what you're doing is working then I would continue! I was so worried after Shine's surgery, just like Jerry said he was clumsy before the accident and now he's having to learn how to get around with only 3 legs. I try to keep his mind busy when he's physically tired, but restless. We play kibble hiding games, and I"m picking up a kong for him today!

I've been told from everyone here that puppies adapt well, and they do! Once she gets going you won't be able to stop her!

I don't have experience with blind pups, but a lot of what fetchon said made sense. She mentioned the runners on the floor to help her learn your home. And it sounds like you're doing a lot of verbal cues to help her! Shine gets bored with tricks easily, and gets sidetracked.....ALOT, lol. I think if you keep up with the verbal cues she will learn in no time!

Keep us posted on her! She's  too cute! Lots of puppy love your way~

Wow, your responses make me feel so much better. I thought it was normal puppy clumsiness combined  with learning to be a tripod, but I was finding much to read about that.

The only reason I was asking about her laying down to potty is because she does sometimes get in it.She also sometimes walk in it after she's done because she can't see it. I'm not too worried, mostly just asking

I think she's had to do stuff on her own for quite some time. When I first got her she wouldn't accept help from me at all. now she will sometimes but not if she's upset she gets more upset when I try to help. I don't know how long she was in a shelter, but clearly she needed to be a fighter and didn't get a lot of good bonding with people early on. So I'm building trust with her bit by bit

I didn't know her before the amputation so I have nothing to compare to. She was  born with a club foot though, and  I've seen some video of her walking and it was tough with that foot.

Jena- Wow!!! Shine and Cora are in such similar places! I look forward to hearing more about shine. It sounds like Shine is doing really well. That's great. Cora isn't learning tricks yet. Hopefully soon. Mostly right now, I'm teaching her basic puppy manners. She has an absolute fit if you pick her up. So we are working on that. She is learning come and is now ok with the leash.

It sounds like you will have a learning experience together but I can't imagine a better way to build a deep, lasting bond. She'll get to be the absolute perfect dog with your help, hang in there and give Cora a big smooch from us!
