Hi,
This is my first post. I am currently fostering Little Miss Spunky, but have submitted my adoption application. She has been blind since birth and was born with a club foot, which was amputated about 2.5 weeks ago. She just got her staples out today.
I'm going to read posts, but I'd love to hear from anyone who had a puppy have an amputation. I'm just trying to figure out where she should be at. We are doing pretty good at potty training but it's hard since she moves kind of slow and getting picked up seems to both scare her (the blindness) and hurt her. I have only picked her up when she was having an accident and today to take her to the vet.
Oh, they also spayed her at the same time so the poor baby has been through a lot. In 3 weeks time, she had the surgery for amputation and spaying and then came to live with me where she had to learn her way around a new house which is hard on any blind dog. She's much more adjusted to the blindness but if anyone has tips on that, focused on the tripod issue, I'd love to hear.

Welcome! We lookforward to following Spunky's progress. As a pup, she should adapt quickly and manage well on three legs. Be sure to focus on strengthening exercises, not just walking. For professional advice about the importance of stretching and exercises, be sure to watch our Cal Animal Rehab Interview Videos.

Hello! Wow, I cannot imagine what struggles the two of you are facing. If we get the pity comments about amputation, now you also get it for her blindness and amputation. That's a lot. But, since she's been blind since birth, she's learned some excellent skills no doubt! What do you do around her to let her know you're coming up on her or about to pick her up? I wonder if there are vocal cues you can give her, so she knows you're about to pick her up, or feed her, or brush her, or...? My mind is bending to think of the unique challenges you're facing. So...thank you for caring so deeply for her! She's got a lot to recover from, but 2.5 weeks out, staples out, pain meds down, she's got to be coming around, right? Isn't it great to see them bounce back? It's a joy! What seems to be a bigger hurdle for her - the amp, blindness, or her spaying? As for puppies, the only one that comes to mind is Shine, a cute little Aussie. Her mom has made a few posts here. She's recovering from amputation and is only a few months old, as well. I think the general consensus is that your little lady has loads of energy and she'll bust her incision or injure herself playing too hard. So, it's up to us to temper their energy. Does she like chew toys rather than chase or fetching games? Putting down runners on smooth floors may be really helpful here - both b/c she's a tripawd and appreciates the traction , but the runners may also help her navigate an unfamiliar home? Jackson is full of energy, too, and we've had to temper his game playing. Tug o' war is kinda tough for him, but he loves fetch (still!!!!) and wrestling with me. Wrestling is a more quiet activity for him. Can you do that with your little one, when she's bursting with energy? Oh! How about those food cubes? You know, where you fill this puzzle like "toy" with their kibble, and they toss it around the house, eating it up? That'll keep her mind busy, that'll keep her muscles going, and give her an energetic outlet. Just make sure to start small, as we're all learning how much energy to let our pups expel. Wow, what a trooper she is! Keep us all informed. And, post some pictures!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12. Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ! No side effects. We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments. He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors! Our love. Our funny little guy!
Hi Spunky and family,
Welcome to the Tripawds community. We hope to be a source of support and help as you start your life together. I can't wait to see pictures of her!
So honestly I don't have a lot of experience with blindness in dogs, but you know who does? Nova, the Great Dane's Mom, Sue. Nova didn't start out blind, or as a Tripawd, both happened to her after she got diagnosed with cancer. Nova's Mom Sue can be PM'd through here with questions and of course other folks are here to help too. I will try to help any way I can as well.
Gotta run, it's chowtime, but I will check in later. Thanks again for joining us!

Hello! I attached links to my baby Bertram's story. Feel free to ask if you have any questions! I have extremely limited experience when it comes to blindness, but I did know a four legged black lab once many years ago who had been blind since birth also and he did great as long as all the furniture in the house stayed in the same place.
Thanks "Admin' (that feels so formal). Those videos are great. This whole site is great, I appreciate it. At some point I'll start a blog. With the new pup and the nasty cold I have, I'm a bit lacking in energy and focus right now.
It's going to take me time to be able to do exercises with her. She has trust issues with people but I'm starting to build trust with her. I've already been tickling her feet.
I had a severely epileptic dog who had pretty bad ataxia as a result and I used to tickle his feet and do some T-touch type of stuff to try to keep his brain working with his legs. Some of the stuff I used to do with him, to help with his mobility issues will definitely apply with her.

Blackdog, you sound like you have a lot of experience with special needs pups. What a pawesome human you are. I know that your Spunky has a great home with a lot of love.
Get well soon. Admin is getting over that cold/flu bug, it's a doozy. Drink lots of fluids, and get lots of doggie kisses, they help too!

fetchon3- hi. The biggest hurdle for her right now is definitely the amp. She's wobbly and frustrated and now that she is starting to feel better, she's been falling more while trying to figure stuff out. I don't know what she was like before the amputation which is part of what makes it hard for me to judge where she's at.
As far as the blindness, there's quite a few things I've done. Before I touch her I say "hi". I do forget sometimes, but at this point I'm training me as well as her. I tell her when I put on her leash and off her leash. I tell her "up" when picking her up and "ground" when setting her down but that doesn't seem to have made any difference at all. All the walls have been scented (with vinegar). I can't smell it, it's so light, but she can. My other dog, Floyd, has a bell on him now. I tell her if "I'm here" if she's near me and "walking by" if I'm, well, walking by her.
She doesn't really play and I asked the vet about that, and she said give it time. I know she wants to play, but all she mostly does is bark at a toy or Floyd. The frustrating thing for her is the toy rolls away and she can't see it. She has some toys that make noise, but I think at that point she just gets too frustrated. She has tried to play with me, doing the puppy play bite thing and when she does that I put a toy in front of her mouth and say "toy". Mostly she seems to explore. She keeps trying to get my cat, and I swear the cat is teasing her. He will stand right in front of her and when she rears up to paw her, he quietly steps away. I actually looked at those food puzzle cubes and was thinking that might work for her.

Jerry- thanks, this is a nasty bug. I think I'm done for the night. But I am definitely going to check out Nova's story. And yeah, I seem to have a thing for special needs dogs. My other dog is fine physically but had been badly abused and neglected and was the most terrified animal I've ever known. He's come a long ways and has more work to do.
And Hhackett thanks for the link. I am looking forward to reading the story. It's so good to know there's others out there with experience, especially with a puppy. Not that I wish any of our critters had to be tripaws of course.
The baby is asleep in her bed by the heater. She loves heat. I think I'm off to curl under some blankets and drink some fluids. I'm glad I found this place.

Good news-
I got the official "yes" to adopting her. So now she is really mine. And her name is going to be Cora, which is what I've mostly been calling her. She's mine (and I'm hers)
Today she has been a true puppy. Into everything, playing and.... (drum roll) running. I read all sorts of posts here about how much better they feel with the staples out and that's for sure.
I hope to figure out pictures today, but this virus I have is wiping me out and since Cora is sleeping I'm going to sleep too.

You all have been great. I'm so glad to have found this group.
A question... She basically seems to lie down when she goes potty. Is she going to get better at that as she recovers and gets older?
I posted pictures on my blog (I figured it out!) and I think I figured out the avatar thing too. Here's one picture here though
