Okay it has been a horrible, wild ride. Last friday my dog got out of our fence somehow and someone decided to shoot him in the leg which makes no sense because he is very non aggressive and a timid sweet dog. Anyway his leg is not salvageable so he had to get it amputated. its the back right. The monday after he tore out his stitches and had to get restitched. Honestly its been awful. then the other day he started having theses "episodes" where he will out of nowhere start crying out in excruciating pain. Its loud, he freaks out, running around like a headless chicken just howling in pain. he won't let me near him to calm him. Progressively its just gotten worse. My vet said this was phantom leg pain , and to keep giving him his medication as directed. he is on gabapentin for this exact reason. 100 mg twice daily, but it doesn't seem to be working for as long as it needs too. because these episodes are happening everyday. they are scary and traumatizing for him and my 2 year old little girl. it doesn't help that i managed to sprain my foot the other day, so i can't get around. Honestly im not even sure what im asking for here, just help??? tonights "episode" lasted for quite awhile i was a sitting duck. i feel so terrible for him, but i dont know what to help. any remedies you guys know?? Anything at all? i cant masage his stump he will only let my husband who works all the time. he runs from me. my other dog seems to have a calming affect, but he's old and he has his own problems, the worry really gets to him. its just a difficult time all around.
Oh my gosh I’m so sorry! It sounds to me like your dog isn’t getting enough gabapentin throughout the day, have you talked to your vet about adjusting his dosage? Keep in mind that gabapentin alone may not do the trick, he may need an additional medication like amantadine and if you are able, acupuncture can make a big difference too. Sometimes severe phantom pain management requires multiple approaches to resolve it.
