Dog boots are a great idea for Tripawds, especially active ones who traverse on many different surfaces.

But getting the right fit can mean the difference between boots that provide traction and safety versus boots that slip and create a tripping hazard. Even being off by 1/4″ can create problems, so always measure carefully.

Ruff Wear, makers of the Skyliner and Bark N’ Boots dog shoes, just posted a fantastic video that will show you how to measure your dog’s feet for boots.

If you are considering ordering boots to help your Tripawd feel  more confident on slick, hot or icy surfaces, please watch this video and follow all instructions before ordering.

Remember, not every dog should wear boots, especially those with neurological challenges and balance issues.

Always consult with your vet or rehabilitation therapist before choosing footwear for your Tripawd.

If your medical professional gives you the go ahead for boots, Tripawds recommends the following dog boots and traction socks:

My tripawd Scooter has his front left leg amputated and as such puts a lot of extra pressure and weight bearing on the other front leg.  We would like to protect his foot from the elements, increase traction and provide extra cushion on that foot. We are considering booties but can't decide if he only needs one booty for the front paw or if we should go with three to put on all paws.  Do you have any insight and/or thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Has Scooter ever worn boots? Some dogs can't stand them, others don't mind at all. If you're uncertain if he will tolerate them, trying one at first may be best. All three boots will certainly help more with traction on slippery floors, but if you're primarily concerned about use outdoors, only one may be necessary. See the review link above for complete details.

If it turns out he won't wear the boot, you can try Musher's Secret. It's like a wax you rub into the pad. It works well and doesn't leave little sticky paw prints all over your floor - which is an added bonus. 🙂

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman.
