Diagnosis is Cancer, Now for the Treatment
In this article Dr. Intile discusses treatment options for dogs diagnosed with osteosarcoma.Great info is available such as:
"Advanced diagnostic tests with increased sensitivity for detecting spread of osteosarcoma tumors are now more readily available. We now recommend a thoracic CT scan as this imaging modality is superior to radiographs for picking up smaller tumors within the lungs and are also better at localizing tumors to specific portions of this tissue. We also can perform nuclear scintigraphy, which is a diagnostic test useful for picking up tumors in other skeletal bones."

Thanks Jerry!
Interesting also that she recommends amp. in almost all cases ipeven if mets in lungs, etc.It seems that many onco/surgeons wo't operate if showing up.
Nice. logical approaches in article....also alerts us all to how inconclusive, or false readings, wome of these tests can be.
Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I agree 100%. I think it's very forward-thinking that she will still recommend amp, since as we've seen here, there have been lots of dogs who had mets from the diagnosis (Spirit Zeus, for example), who went on to have a great quality of life after surgery. Not as long as anyone would have wanted but at least he got quality time together with his pack before saying goodbye.
I like Dr. Intile!

Totally agree. Love Dr Intile! she's sent Jilly TWO postcards
Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. We are honored by Dr. Intile's mention of Tripawds in her second article about osteosarcoma, "Palliative Treatment Options for Cancer."
A very good resource of information about amputation is Tripawds, where the motto is “It’s better to hop on three legs than limp on four.” Here, owners of three-legged pets provide a fantastic support network for each other and for owners considering surgery. One can find a group of “peers” to bounce questions off of and read personal experiences on individual blog pages and forums. I also direct owners to search “Three-legged dogs” on youtube, as there are thousands of videos of dogs racing around after amputation, helping to support the notion that amputation is neither cruel nor debilitating.
