Just wanted to put this in here in case anyone in Indiana is looking to help a dog find a home: there is a great group called CanINE Express Transport Project we just learned about. They are doing amazing work. Just wanted to spread the word.
Mission Statement
The mission of the CanINE Express Transport Project is to partner with select shelters to facilitate the placement of Indiana shelter dogs with suitable guardians.
History
The CanINE Express Transport Project humanely transports shelter dogs from south central Indiana -- areas with extreme pet overpopulation and high euthanasia rates due to kennel overcrowding -- to shelters in areas in our country where there is a need for well-socialized, healthy dogs. This instrastate project, that began with its maiden voyage in December 2004 and currently has more than 30 partner shelters, has successfully transported 9,857 Indiana shelter dogs.
A benefit not visualized at the project’s beginning is that our partners have shared best sheltering practices including spay/neuter education, medical care, promoting adoptions, increasing volunteerism, and political activism to build and grow state legislation related to animal issues.

I love seeing the success stories and love learning of the many transport options available. There are several large transport groups who have the shelter connections and the transportation vehicles to do something similar and make a huge difference.
I drive transport for some of the independent groups, as well as monitoring transports for Martha's Mutt Movers out of Ohio. These folks work hard to get the resources together to move animals to safety every weekend and often during the week as well. They can't move the number of dogs the commercial folks can move, but they put their heart and soul into each one they move.
Transport, commercial or independent, is a true life saver for many shelter animals each year.
