We are looking for a sweet family for This boy. This is Spike, though he call him Duke. He was surrendered by his owner when he became to ill to take care of the sweet boy and his family, Bonez- Name is now Mia, and their 6 pups. He LOVES men and women, not great with young children but could be worked with. He is also soon to be a tripawd pup. He is almost 2 years old. He is a Pit. We are a rescue located in Michigan and really want a great home lined up for him and are willing to find transport if it is needed. We would love it even more if we had a family for him BEFORE his surgery. Someone who he could bond with during the recovery process. Our rescue has raised the money to have the surgery done and will be covering it
Spike has a dislocated hip.
A little Background on the injury-
He had the injury when he was younger and it was put back in his socket. The injury reoccurred in November and the owner made the choice not put the leg back, even though he took the dog to the vet and was told it was the best choice. We believe he couldn't afford it and did nothing even though he loved his dogs very much but could not care properly for him. His health was deteriorating quickly and he agreed to surrender the dogs and the puppies.
Jump to now, Spike saw his vet again today and we talked about many options. There were 3 options; resetting the leg back into the hip socket, Surgery called FHO; A femoral head ostectomy where they remove the head and neck from the femur. FHO surgery is performed to alleviate pain; and the last option was amputation.
We talked with the vet for some time but with the evaluation done today he believe Amputation is best option. Reasons being- he has very function of the leg, he can not bare weight on it and he is unable to feel when they do a pinch test. The FHO was likely not going to give him any function in his leg and would not work like it would have if they were able to do it earlier. Putting the leg back in the socket was also out. It had already failed once before and the length of time it has been out it would not work.
So together we made the choice that we believed would be best for Spike.
Those eyes......sooooo sweet!!! He's such a handsome boy!
Thanks for postinf this and spreading the word. Many of us here end up adopting trilawds and hopefully Spike can find his new family here.
I feel very sorry for Spike's human too. Wjhen you have no finances and then failing health...and then have to give up your dog so he can get the proper care.....so sad.
Paws crossed for all involved!!
Hugs to all!
