We will probably consider adopting a tripawd after Tshuvah passes; is there a way to search on petfinder? I looked around the site but didn't see any search option that had to do with number of legs.

Aww Beth, really? How cool. Well like we say, once you have a 3-legger you can never go back to four.
Unfortunately I think that you can only search by "special needs" when looking for a Tripawd. Which is just completely silly because Tripawds are definitely not special needs. Special yes, needy, no.
That's why we started the Tripawd Rescue Forums anyhow. We have an APB out on available Tripawds and we do our best to stay current on what Tripawds are looking for a home.

This is the only way I've found to do it, also. Just click the "special needs" box, and the Tripawds will be mixed in with the other dogs that come up. I tend to find myself often searching Petfinder for Tripawds. Maybe someday ...
Amputation on 11/10/09, due to Histiocytic Sarcoma in left elbow. Angel Harley earned his wings on 06/24/10.
I beg to differ. Some of our tripawds were (or are) really needy . . . my Tazzie, Queen Nova, Princess Tika, and most of all 3&1/2 leg Comet (we love you Comet, but your Mom tells such stories) . . . but I suspect they were just as needy when they had four legs.
In any case, we hope to see Tshuvah around here for a long while yet
Beth, I am so glad to hear you will be looking for a tripawd rescue. It somehow helped me come full circle with the loss of Raven. Knowing that another dog (Miles) went through what he went through and wasn't going to be adopted and found a home here. A home that wouldn't have existed if Raven hadn't prepared the way.
And also as a result of Miles' publicity, a gal on the bulldog forum that is an amputee herself has adopted a tripawd from out of state! This is THANKS to you. She intends on hopefully using her as a therapy dog to inspire others (humans and dog owners both). I asked how she found Velvet, here's her response:
HI Dawn,
I found Velvet ( now known as Harley) from a local rescue. What I did was call a local rescue in my area and explained what I wanted,
She had contacts with numerous rescues around the country and they all pooled their resources to find my match.. I suggest that this woman call a local shelter in her area and maybe they can help her.
Good luck to her and let me know how it turns out. If you want you can give her my e-mail address so we can talk that is fine.
Just want to share a video o Velvet ( now known as Harley) playing at the rescue in South Carolina. Considering she only has 3 legs she gets around pretty well
Stay in touch.. Love to you, Betty, Miles and the rest of your gang

Rottie Raven, osteosarcoma at 8-1/2 years old, amputation in October '09 and in February '10 due to liver mets he went back to heaven where he came from. raven.tripawds.com
Now I have Miles, rottie mix amputee from a shelter and traveled 1500 miles to find his way here through the Rescue Railroad thanks to tripawds.com. miles.tripawds.com
Thanks Dawn. I'll always feel I was part of something really special and important in the whole process of Miles finding his home with you. And if it "passes forward", how wonderful is that?! thank you for telling me about Velvet/Harley (wow, that's a lot of energy!). I'm sure I will be able to find another tripawd when the time is right. I love your blog and follow it weekly. Hugs to Miles and Betty,

Following along on the links, I found this one that has a ton! http://www.pets.....html#three
I already have about a half-dozen that would 'work'. You all are bad influences!!!
"I don't know where I am."
Yeah, Max was listed as Special Needs on Petfinder. They listed him there for the leg, but I think his only special need is that he is a crazy dog! He is very sensitive to light and sound and chases the light across the room when a car passes. Cuckoo! I wasn't even looking for a tripawd, and his photo was UGLY!!!! I'll have to scan it some time to show you guys. But there was line in the description that read "Max is a good boy" and that was it. I brought him home.
If there is a particular breed of dog you are looking for (or mix), you might contact a local rescue for them and let them know. Give them your contact info. Wish the Shiba Rescue, I did that (after having Max). I ended up working with the rescue and we then got a family of pups in, one of which had a deformed leg. He's mine now. I couldn't resist!

Oh no! I will have to try NOT to look at the posts or I will be a three dog family again!
